Just finished "Lord of the Silent", by Elizabeth Peters, the 13th book in the "Amelia Peabody" series. The First World War continues, and Egypt (annexed by Britain at the outbreak of war) is a hotbed of intrigue, with nobody knowing who may be an agent for what country. The chaos of war, with government inspectors otherwise engaged, is a golden opportunity for tomb robbers to carry out their work almost unchallenged. Soon rumours start spreading that "Sethos", the shadowy figure previously at the head of the criminal underworld, may have returned and once again be controlling the illegal trade in antiquities. The Emerson family investigate.

Absolutely excellent. Highly recommended!

Just finished "Bolo Strike" by William H. Keith Jr, bought from Baen in September 2001. Baen description:

Quote:
TO THE VICTOR GO THE SPOILS ....

And this Victor is fully capable of raking them in, a Bolo Mark XXXIII of the 4th Regiment, Second Brigade, First Confederation Mobile Army Corps, in the vanguard of an all-out Bolo strike against the planet Caern. The enemy is the Aetryx, shadowy, unknown beings who enslave other species with nothing less than the promise of immortality. As a savage, interstellar war begins, Colonel Jon Streicher prepares to lead Victor and the rest of his regiment in that most difficult of tactical evolutions—planetary invasion.

But D-Day turns into a disaster, and Caern is a deadly trap. Colonel Streicher and his command team find themselves stranded on the target planet, desperately attempting to survive the hellfire chaos of modern warfare, as Bolo faces Bolo/human hybrid in a cataclysmic showdown that will uncover unexpected truths, reveal hidden secrets, and even call into question the loyalty of the Dinochrome Brigade itself.

For just what will happen if the Aetryx aren't slavers after all, but literal gods who can make good on their promise of eternal life?

The Dinochromes are about to find out.
Excellent military SF. Highly recommended.

Good Lord, why am I still reading this? Miss Carr has cooked up a lovely pot of contemporary trope soup: start with a base of steampunk, salt it with a little urban fiction, stir in "Bones" with some "Silence of the Lambs" and lovely fresh Joker, and of course, some thickly-sliced Rule 63 Jekyll & Hyde. Throw in some "Dexter" and Arkam for taste.

... At least she has good grammar (and/or an attentive editor).

Currently reading "Rebel Yell: The Violence, Passion, and Redemption of Stonewall Jackson" by S.C.Gwynne (author of Empire of the Summer Moon).

A non-linear biography of Jackson, and what seems to me to be an even-handed picture of his virtues and vices. So far, excellent discussions of Jackson's short US army career, his life as a teacher at VMI, his role at First Manassas, and his Valley campaign.

Finished. I identified the killer halfway through, but it was painful yet engaging all the way through.

Kind of like watching a Syfy movie.

Finally got round to reading Rabbit, Run by John Updike, which has been on my TBR (and a previous yearly challenge) for ages. For some reason, maybe the title, I was expecting comedy, or at least humour, but it is actually pretty depressing and a bit dark. Wonderful writing and language, though. Definite contender for the "Great American Novel" title.

Just finishing up the first book in the Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbø, and looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Well written with good character development, a fast moving story with a great plot, and just enough humor to keep it real.

OK. Good for its time, but dated in attitudes, and not a very good plot.

Enjoyable space opera. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Next Up: The Lizard Wars by John Dalmas. Another long-ago purchase, this time from Baen.

Judging from the intro, this is Alien Invasion (or assistance?) some time post-nuclear apocalypse.

Looking quite fun so far.

I remember it as a fun read and I hope you enjoy it.
There is a sequel, published in 2003, The Helverti Invasion.

Sounds interesting. Are there any illustrations/diagrams that I will miss in the audio book?

He has maps at the beginning every chapter. They show the disposition of armies and their direction of movement that will be being described in that chapter. Also, he includes pictures of paintings of the battles and the major characters at the end of each chapter. The eBook is fully illustrated and you will not have these aids with the audio book.

Also finished Sharpe's Prey, and now listening to Magic's Price, the third and final book in the Last Herald Mage Valdemar series from Mercedes Lackey.
Finished Chanur's Venture, mostly as an audio book, but some eBook too. Now listening to The Kif Strike Back, read by Dina Pearlman. A good series.

Also finished Magic's Price, the last of the Last Herald Mage trilogy. I really enjoyed this trilogy, a definite change from Ms. Lackey's more recent books.

Now reading Cally's War, a book and a series which I've had around here for AGES and I decided to give it a try.
