I realized that when you mentioned a "step 7" and I didn't know what that was. D'oh I had googled for instructions and somehow wound up at a standalone post for step 5.

Mission Accomplished for now. Re: step 7, just to confirm, I don't have to block updates unless I want to, right? I can let it update, it'll still be jailbroken, and I'd just have to reinstall anything like KUAL or Librariansync?

That is correct.
The blocking of updates in your case was just so you could go on-line long enough for Amazon's system to update the Devices S.O. status -
Without updating its firmware version.

Right, yeah, I guess I wasn't clear about how far I'd gotten. I did that, turned the wifi back off, and went through the rest of the jailbreak without a hitch. Now I'm back at step seven, with a nice new jailbroken 5.5.0 installed and wondering if I can start installing KUAL, or if an update will eat it and/or my supposedly update-proof jailbreak.

Sorry if I'm pestering, by the way. It's just that the last time I jailbroke a kindle was my paperwhite like 5 years ago, and the big commandment was Thou Shalt Not Let It Update, Evar, and I'm a little nervous about screwing it up.

I'm not the expert, but until he's back: I believe your 5.5.0 is a FACTORY version, and is not suitable for normal running. I believe you have to install SOME other version of software. The one it came with could be good.

You MUST complete Steps #7 and #8
The spoiler in #7 hides the links to consumer firmware releases.
Nothing that we make was ever intended to run on the factory (internal use only) firmware.

Yes, it will survive.

You should also install the 'hotfix' to your old paperwhite.
Then you can let it update also.

The Downgrade worked! The new Firmware is now 5.7.4
So its possible to downgrade from 5.8.9.0.1

Thank you for your help. I will try to get the jailbreak on the device tomorrow.

Do you think there will be a workaround to jailbreak firmware 5.8.9.2? If not I would send that updated device back to amazon

Safe at this point, as the JB will remain, but you will need to reinstall much of the enhancements as only the JB itself is preserved over an update.

Of course there is no guarantee as to what Amazon may do in the future. Are there any features in the update that you can't live without? In that case go ahead and update. Otherwise you might want to install the blocker to prevent an Amazon update until such time as they offer something new you can't live without. Even then I would suggest you wait until it is confirmed that the new upgrade does not take aggressive measures against the JB.

If you do decide to update I would suggest you install the RP and CRP first, as they should give you some protection should the upgrade go horribly wrong in some way. The most common way for horrible things to happen is if you allow an upgrade to start with a low battery and the storage is corrupted.

What do you all think the chances of finding a copy of a 5.8.9.0.1.bin file on the filesystem using a deleted file recovery program are? I don't think the firmware was probably installed that way, but there's a possibility right?

If anyone see this comment and still has one of thee new paperwhites coming int he mail, think about trying it for us!

I only follow the postings of Amazon(USA) -
They have never posted anything numbered 5.8.9.0.1 - the USA postings are: 5.8.9.0.2
The -.0.1 can be jailbroken, the -.0.2 can not.

Most likely, they dropped the "block downgrade" patch for the build of that one version (and they caught it before they shipped any to the USA).
