Most folks who walk the AT don't do it end-to-end in one go. I've walked its full length, doing sections at a time, over the course of four years, and many times doing the same sections several times just because we liked them and they were close by. The AT uses the same foot path as the lower half of Vermont's "Long Trail," and the Killington section of the trail was just a few miles from my house. In New Hampshire, the AT follows the ridge line of the Presidential Range, and that section can be walked in three days, not even needing a sleeping bag nor tent as there are mountain huts every five miles along its length. That leads into the Franconia Range. Both surround the Pemmigewasset Wilderness Area, and these three were my playground for more than 20 years, both summer and winter backpacking, camping, climbing, and XC-skiing.
The book was remarkable for its ability to convey the mind-set of the different sorts of hikers one will encounter on the trail, and for the descriptive skill in relating the feel of the AT when one is walking along its paths. There is just something wonderful that fills you when you are 3-4 days away from the trail head, knowing that you won't encounter civilization for a week or so. Unfortunately, the AT cuts across various highways every 3-7 days, so you never really get the wilderness feeling while you hike it. At almost every point in the trail there are side trails one can take that lead back to a main road in less than a day. Stitchawl |

I'm just a wee bit ahead of you. Currently reading The Devil's Novice, book #8. I have a goal of completing all 20 books in the series by the end of the year. I really like the books, but for some reason, these books are "slow reading". Other books of similar length go much faster. I wish I could analyze why this is, but it's more a case of simply recognizing it as a truth.

Okay!
Also, after 1066 and all that, a battle royal waged between the cities and the countryside in Britian over how to form the plural. Cities wanted to stick with the German method, i.e., adding the letters en to the word. Example: One house, two housen. The countryside wanted to use the French way by adding the letter s. Ironically, the countryside won and we use the letter s. But there are at least four words in the English language that we still form the plural by adding en. You know all four of them. Three you use everyday. |

Oh, wait... only computer geeks use that. Why is the paperback cheaper than the eBook? Last edited by Dngrsone; 05-13-2015 at 12:44 PM. |

^Because they know people will pay more. People will hate it, but they will pay more. Did I mention that many people will pay more.
I finished Ali and Nino by Kurban Said. What a great read. One of the best books I've read this year. |

I finished The Romulan Way by Diane Duane and Peter Moorwood. This is the second installment in the Rihannsu series. This book mostly detailed the origin and history of the Romulans. There was a little action towards the end that felt somewhat hurried. Kirk and Spock are not present in this one. There was also more advanced tech than in the original series. Overall, this book didn't excite me or hold my interest. Rated C- [2 stars].
Next will be Blue Labyrinth by Preston & Child. I'm anxious to start this. |

I use "fen" and "boxen" more often than I use "oxen" or "brethren"...
