It's been delightful to return to space with Kris Longknife and Vicky Peterwald.
Finished Kris Longknife: Redoubtable and turned to another book on my Series Challenge list, Circle of Quilters by Jennifer Chiaverini. It was good and I finished it at the airport today. Now busy reading The Sanctuary Sparrow by Ellis Peters, the 7th Cadfael mystery. Borrowed it from the library.

Just finished Viola Carr's The Diabolical Miss Hyde, and quite liked it. I am pleased to note that it is presently on sale; it is currently $1.99 from the publisher. Available at Amazon, Kobo, and likely most other places.

Special bit of enjoyment: At the beginning of one chapter, there is a scene where lightning strikes a "mechanical carriage" (causing a coruscating blue effect) as well as a new clock tower. I cannot testify that the time was 10:04 PM, but this takes place exactly 88% of the way into the book.

Finished up Claire North's The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August just in time to read that it has been shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clark Award. It's not hard to see why.

Now starting Ken Liu's (novel) debut, The Grace of Kings. I thought his award-winning short stories were fantastic; so here's to hoping that talent scales well to novel-length stuff!

Two books into my month of no SF&F:

The Four Last Things - Timothy Hallinan. Fairly unoriginal LA private eye novel featuring a cultish religion, but I liked the characters and enjoyed the book. And I can't argue with the price, since it was a freebie.

Battle Flag - Bernard Cornwell. The third book in the Starbuck series, set in the US Civil War. I don't know much about the war, so I'm not much spoilered by actual history. I've been meaning to read this for years, since I read the first two. I don't like all of Cornwell's stuff, I think it depends on the historical period he is working with, but I have found this series to be up there with Sharpe.

My daily short stories are mainly coming from the Mammoth Book of Locked Room Mysteries and Impossible Crimes, which should last me a while, although I did also read a standalone freebie from Tess Gerritsen, which was kind of lightweight.

On to Murder on the Orient Express, next. One of the very small number of Agatha Christie books where I definitely know who did it, and I don't know how that will affect my reading.

Just finished "Curse of the Pharaohs", a re-read of the second book in the "Amelia Peabody" series of Egyptological whodunnits by Elizabeth Peters (the pen-name of the American Egyptologist Barbara Mertz). Radliffe Emerson is asked by Lady Baskerville to take over the work of excavating a tomb in the Valley of the Kings following the mysterious death of her husband, Lord Baskerville, but a serious of deaths ensue. Is the curse put on the tomb by its ancient owner to blame?

Very, very good.

Last night, I finished Molly Fyde and the Parsona Rescue by Hugh Howey. Excellent book!! Very nice space opera/adventure. Now I have no choice but to start the next book Molly Fyde and the Land of Light.

Another series I'll have to return to soon. I found that one quite fun to read, as I did the first in the series.

Another winner. Really, I'm impressed that Ms. Cherryh has managed to keep this series from becoming routine. This is the start of a new arc of three interconnected novels and begins with the children from the station enjoying the last of their trip to visit Cajeiri, and going back to the station. A period of quiet in the aishidi’tat, but that doesn't mean Bren can retire quite yet. 5 Stars, but only if you're already a reader of the Foreigner series. And if you're not, you should be. Start at the beginning, and pace yourself, but you'll have a lot to look forward to.

Yes indeed. I lose track of this series sometimes, but always enjoy it when I get back to reading the next in line. I think #5 is next for me.

I agree. Absorbing from beginning to end. Reminds me a bit of the second trilogy. I suppose we have to wait for another year for the next book.

Finished reading the MobileRead Book Club selection of the month, Cannery Row, which I definitely enjoyed. Next up is The Resistance Man, #6 in the delightful Bruno, Chief of Police series.

Which didn't disappoint. Boromir is more rounded in the book than in most adaptions.

As soon as I finished reading The Sanctuary Sparrow, I started reading A Dangerous Place, the latest volume in the Maisie Dobbs mystery series by Jacqueline Winspear. It was fantastic. I highly recommend the entire series -- this is one that really needs to be read in the order written in order to experience the character development over time.
