And now I discover that Microsoft has poked an uncalled for desktop.ini file into my Calibre\Libraries\Books folder. Why would anyone want an icon that resembles a book on a folder that they created with the name "Books".

That's File Explorer, which creates those turds because of folder type detection or discovery or something. There is no UI setting for it, of course. You need to edit registry keys or use a third party tool to shut it off.

I use Winaero Tweaker to Disable automatic folder type discovery.

No gpedit setting either, so its Winaero for me too.

What I don't understand is that it must have happened fairly recently, I would look at my Calibre/Libraries folder several times a week. I loathe unnecessary clutter and I notice such things to the annoyance of those around me.

I did this just the other day, never knew about that tweak! Winaero is an essential tool. Now to find how to disable the File Explorer grouping the sort at will...

I don't get the narrow columns issue. 1920x1080 screen and all the info is crammed into a space probably 300 px wide, and the rest of the screen is white. Why ffs?!?!?!

I had to update my perfectly functional Win10 21H1 this week, only after some programs started requiring it... So I'm still checking what changed.

Fortunately I didn't get the narrow columns issue!

That's what I used to update from 21H1 to 22H2, it will download all update packages directly from MS then it creates an ISO image.

(just had to run that then mount the image and install the new version while keeping all apps and settings)

I get a certain... joy out of marketing surveys asking me questions about a specific product category whether or not they actually make any sense. Such as whether my most recent purchase of cat litter was new or secondhand, and whether I'd be more likely to purchase it if it were labeled "gently used" rather than secondhand.

And 'a certain joy' means I'm pretty much doubled over laughing.
