I wish I had bought them then I'm in the mood to listen to them. Not that I miss material to listen...

Also, in France libraries don't use overdrive. Checking out ebooks here... the choici is so small and the ebooks only in French, so that option is void for me, alas. But thanks for suggesting it.

I checked my receipts. They were $2.99 each when I got them on 16 Feb 2013, the same day the Kindle versions were Kindle Daily Deals (also $2.99 each).

A Couple of Good Deals from Downpour

I find what I'm about to do very difficult. It's about all that I can do to post an item that is not free. But, I'm about to do it. In fact, I'm about to post two of them. And, they're not even close to being free. I'm having to steel myself. It's very difficult . . . .

Will you still think the same of me when I get through? Or, will my reputation be . . . be . . . ruined??? Oh, the shame! *sobbing uncontrollably* *reaching for a tissue* *blowing my nose*.

Please, my fellow Mobilereaders, please forgive me for this temporary lapse! I am only human and subject to failures as any human being!!! I promise that I'll be back to my miserly ways in my next post if at all possible, or, if not that post, at least the next one after that! I beg your patience . . . .

The audiobook company Downpour has a couple of books at great prices for download only (other formats are at regular prices, I think) "this week." Find both of them at http://www.downpour.com/downpour-dea...al+of+the+Week. Here they are:

The Divine Comedy. By Dante Alighieri. $4.95. I listened to a little bit of the audio and I thought that the narration was acceptable. Audible's price at the present moment is $19.95 (will Audible sometimes match the prices of competitors as its sister company Amazon will sometimes do? Does anyone know?). At Audible it is currently rated 3.7 stars from 192 ratings.

Blackstone Audio presents a new recording of this classic masterpiece, originally published in 1320, read by award-winning narrator Ralph Cosham.

No words can describe the greatness of this work, a greatness both of theme and of artistry. Dante’s theme is universal; it involves the greatest concepts that man has ever attained. Only a genius could have found the loftiness of tone and the splendor and variety of images that are presented in
The Divine Comedy.

The story is an allegory representing the soul’s journey from spiritual depths to spiritual heights. As mankind exposes itself, by its merits or demerits, to the rewards or the punishments of justice, it experiences “Inferno” or hell, “Purgatorio” or purgatory, and “Paradiso” or heaven, a vision of a world of beauty, light, and song. Dante’s arduous journey through the circles of hell make for an incredibly moving human drama, and a single listen will reveal the power of Dante’s imagination to make the spiritual visible.

In this edition, “Inferno” is translated by John Aitken Carlyle, “Purgatorio,” by Thomas Okey, and “Paradiso” by Philip H. Wicksteed.

The Plantagenets. By Dan Jones. $6.95. Audible's price at the present moment is $20.95. At Audible it is currently rated 4.1 stars from 195 ratings.

The first Plantagenet king inherited a blood-soaked kingdom from the Normans and transformed it into an empire that stretched at its peak from Scotland to Jerusalem. In this epic history, Dan Jones vividly resurrects this fierce and seductive royal dynasty and its mythic world. We meet the captivating Eleanor of Aquitaine, twice queen and the most famous woman in Christendom; her son, Richard the Lionheart, who fought Saladin in the Third Crusade; and King John, a tyrant who was forced to grant the Magna Carta, which formed the basis of our own Bill of Rights. This is the era of chivalry, Robin Hood, and the Knights Templar, the era of the Black Death, the Black Prince, the founding of Parliament, and the Hundred Years’ War.

I just found a promo code for an additional 10% off that is supposedly good through 6/30/14. I know, at least, that it worked for me when I checked out at Downpour a few minutes ago. The code is LISTEN10. Put it in the box that says "promo or download code" in your shopping cart and click "apply," just before going to checkout, to receive the discount.

A pity I wasn't enamoured with audiobooks yet at that time!

How is this one? I was considering it, but I am unsure if I would enjoy it. I am not good with poetry or advanced language structure (I am not english native), I just enjoy a good story.

Well, it's considered an epic (read: it's l o n g). You really need to pay attention when you're listening to it or you'll get "lost." It's definitely not poetry (what we generally consider poetry, anyway); it doesn't have advanced language structure. I don't remember now, but either Downpour's or Audible's site has a 4 or 5 minute clip that would give you a good idea of the nature of the whole story.

Have you checked your library? Both of these audiobooks (and these versions) are available in several of mine. That makes them free for me. I have no desire to listen to The Divine Comedy; but thanks to your post, I will listen to The Plantagenets. I love history. Thanks.

YAY! Even though I never got the banner, I did receive the $10 Audible credit for purchasing 4 audiobooks in April.

So I used that for Carpe Diem in the scifi sale and still have a few dollars over. I'll probably use that for a whispersync title.

I used a credit to buy Local Custom as I want to try and read the Liaden books in order. (I have read Agent Of Change in ebook, but that was a freebie.)

Good

What gets me is the disconnect between Audible reps and company policy. On two separate occasions, they absolutely told me I didn't qualify for the offer; and yet, I still got it. Needless to say, I'm not impressed with their customer service.

Thanks, I checked out the Downpour clip, and it certainly seem like something where you have to pay attention as you mention. I think I'll do it on eBook when I am retired instead.

I find one has to strictly monitor them to make sure you get your due with their promotions. When I didn't receive my $10 credit by last night I opened a chat and here is my conversation. (I bought a few of my qualifying titles with Whispersync.)

Quote:
Me:Can you please tell me when you'll be crediting my account with what I earned during your April promotion to buy 4 books and get a $10 credit? I understand the credit was to be applied 5/5.
Jermaine:Thanks for contacting Audible, my name is Jermaine and I would be glad to help you with your inquiry.
I would be more than willing to check on this for you.
Upon further review of your Audible.com account, I am seeing where you ordered six titles in the month of April but only one title had the regular price of $14.95 and that was Sylvester. To be eligible for this promotion you would have to had ordered four titles with the regular price of $14.95.
As a one time exception, I will go ahead and issue a $10 coupon to your account so this can be used towards the purchase of an audiobook.
Me:I appreciate your giving the the credit, thank you. However, I have a question. The promotion clearly stated that the audiobooks had to have a "regular price" of more than $14.95. This is the case for each of the titles I purchased.
Jermaine:The way how it works is if you order titles for a discounted price different from the 30% off which comes with your membership, the price that is given would be the regular price.
It seems you got some of the titles with promotions given.
Does that last statement make any sense? It doesn't to me! Anyway, I am sure I received my credit for previous "buy 4, get $10" promotions without dissent from Audible, using a few Whispersync titles in order to qualify.
