On a different note. I was still thinking about a remark I made ages ago here. About never buying a citroen as citroen = lemon and who wants to buy a lemon! Just to let you know: the original family name of the creator (Andre) of Citroen was "limoenman" (aka, key lime man) as one of his ancestors sold limes when he had to pick a family name in 1811 by the introduction of the civil registry... Andre's grandfather's father-in-law didn't like that name and thought "Citroen" was better. The umlaut was only added by one of the teachers of Andre... So, finally got that out of my system! |

Excellent! Now I can lay here on the couch and watch Dogs of Our Lives every day - with my eyes closed, of course. Thanks, Sweepea! Um, could someone get up and get me another biccie?

Origin: biscuit (though I think in American "biscuit" is more like a scone, and here what covers "biscuit" or "biccie", they might call a "cookie" and "cracker", though we do use the latter sometimes. I don't know what they call those hard "dog biscuits"...probably "dog biscuits")

"Biccie" is a word here that'd wake our dogs from comas - that is, the kind you have to spell out if you want to talk about without feeling compelled by pleading faces to hand a couple out. Cheers, Marc |

I have to say that the Wikipedia description of country gravy makes me feel faintly queasy.
To me it looks like "add milk and flour to a heap of cholesterol plus free radicals, then serve on a scone." All of which just goes to show how each country has ingrained food preferences. Doubtless your American foremothers didn't want to waste anything, and your forefathers needed the calories for a long day of hard work out on the prairie. I've got several American cookery books, and have also noticed that you are surprisingly adventurous about mixing sweet and savoury items. I just wouldn't dream of serving bacon on the same plate as maple syrup, not even with waffles. I never buy scones because they are only nice when freshly made. So if I want them then I make them myself. And in my part of the worls they are served at tea-time with fresh butter and jam; and cream only if one wants to make an effort. |
