$3.95 -- Brief History of Misogyny -- Jack Holland/ C Stewart --> 9.7 hrs/ R-4.6 --> history

Quote:
A Brief History of Misogyny: The World's Oldest Prejudice

Whispersync: no deals at this time

In this compelling, powerful book, highly respected writer and commentator Jack Holland sets out to answer a daunting question: How do you explain the oppression and brutalization of half the world's population by the other half, throughout history? The result takes the listener on an eye-opening journey through centuries, continents, and civilizations as it looks at both historical and contemporary attitudes to women.

Encompassing the Church, witch hunts, sexual theory, Nazism and pro-life campaigners, we arrive at today's developing world, where women are increasingly and disproportionately at risk because of radicalised religious belief, famine, war and disease. Well-informed and researched, highly readable and thought-provoking, this is no outmoded feminist polemic: It's a refreshingly straightforward investigation into an ancient, pervasive, and enduring injustice. It deals with the fundamentals of human existence - sex, love, violence - that have shaped the lives of humans throughout history.

The answer? It's time to recognize that the treatment of women amounts to nothing less than an abuse of human rights on an unthinkable scale. A Brief History of Misogyny is an important and timely book that will make a long-lasting contribution to the efforts to improve those rights throughout the world.

Jack Holland was a highly respected author and journalist known particularly for his commentary about Northern Irish politics. He grew up in Belfast (where he was taught by Seamus Heaney) and worked with Jeremy Paxman and other outstanding journalists at BBC Belfast during a period of seminal current affairs programming. Jack published four novels and seven works of non-fiction, most of the latter having to do with politics and terrorism in Northern Ireland, including the best-selling Phoenix. Sadly, Jack died of cancer in 2004, just after the manuscript of Misogyny had been delivered and accepted by his US publisher. On his death, his family received letters of respect from statesmen including Ted Kennedy and Hilary Clinton, who had come to rely on his balanced analysis of Irish politics.

$3.99 -- In Heart of Dark Wood -- Billy Coffey/ G Wicks --> 10.7 hrs/ R-4.4 --> fic inspirational

Quote:
In the Heart of the Dark Wood

Whispersync: Audible ($12.99) | Kindle ($7.99)

It's a fool's errand - but this quest through the dark woods is the only chance Allie has of ever feeling at home again.

Mary Granderson’s body was never found after a tornado swept through the town of Mattingly. For her daughter Allie, each of the 542 days since have robbed her of a bit more hope that her mother will come home. Allie’s father has turned to drink in a failed effort to contain his grief. What light still shines in Allie’s life comes from three things: her best friend Zach, the broken compass Mary gave her just before the tornado struck, and the nativity scene that has sat in their front yard ever since - mother, father, and child together.

Allie wakes one morning to find Mary missing from the nativity - taken, she believes, by her father in an attempt to force Allie to move on. Amidst her panic and grief, Allie discovers that the compass on her wrist - broken since the tornado - is now functioning, and the needle points not north, but to Mary.

Accompanied by Zach and her dog, the compass leads Allie away from town into the wilderness surrounding Mattingly. As the children wander farther into the dark woods, they find themselves lost and cold… and they slowly discover they're not alone. Something is following them, something that shouldn't be there. And it will take all the courage and sacrifice that two children can summon to not only save themselves, but to bring Mary home.

Ebook--4.5 stars (20) Amazon; 4.05 (620) GoodReads. Oh, and it seems that I read somewhere or another that it is a Kindle store (or maybe it was Audible) best seller.

Apparently, based upon the (single) 2-star review at Amazon, the author of this book chooses to exercise Political Correctness in his treatment of this subject. That's his choice--authors in countries with liberal free speech rights have a wide latitude about expressing their opinions. But it's too bad, because the seriousness of the subject tends to be lessened in some people's minds when bogus examples are thrown in like the author apparently does. Discerning readers know when they're being fed a crock of crap, however.

On a lighter side, it's interesting that the publisher and/or author calls it the world's oldest prejudice. That's tongue-in-cheek, I hope. Because how would anyone know that? It's like the description of prostitution as "the world's second oldest profession." How would anyone know that? Again, you've got to believe that it's humor, and that it's meant to emphasize how very old that profession has to be. Anyway, the subtitle of the book does make you think . . . .

I'm buying the audiobook.

Attn y'all --> this program is restricted to participating schools and homeschoolers only

Quote:
A Parent’s Guide to Raising a Reader
You just heard from your child’s teacher that the class will be participating in the BOOK IT! Program. Here is some info about the program and how you can be a partner at home to ensure your child’s success.

What is the BOOK IT! Program?
Created in 1984 by Pizza Hut, BOOK IT! fosters a lifelong love of reading by motivating children to read by rewarding their reading accomplishments with praise, recognition and pizza!

Why is our school participating in the BOOK IT! Program?
The BOOK IT! Program is free to K-6 grade classrooms and homeschools. This flexible program allows teachers to set an individual reading goal for your child, based on their ability, and when your child meets that goal each month (October – March) they are recognized by their teacher and awarded with a certificate redeemable for a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza® from Pizza Hut.
Quote:
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE?
The BOOK IT! Program is offered to students in grades kindergarten through sixth (ages 5-12 years old) at the school they primarily attend.

I AM A HOME EDUCATOR. AM I ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN BOOK IT!?
Yes! If you are a home educator and your K-6 grade (ages 5-12) child does not attend another educational facility, you are eligible to participate. Please visit our homeschool enrollment page for more information.

CAN VIRTUAL/ONLINE SCHOOLS ENROLL?
Yes. Virtual/Online schools must complete a Virtual/Online Academy Enrollment Order Form and Roster each year and return it via email or mail. Please call us at 800.426.6548 to request an enrollment form. Enrollment is open from August 1-September 15.

ARE OTHER GROUPS AND CLUBS ELIGIBLE?
No. While many other groups and programs (e.g., before and after school programs, public libraries, family resource centers, etc.) share our love of reading, our Advisory Council feels that if students participate in BOOK IT! with more than one organization, the rewards are less effective.

IS BOOK IT! OFFERED INTERNATIONALLY?
The program is available at participating Pizza Hut restaurants in Canada and Puerto Rico. Please contact their offices directly for program information and availability.

about 200-250 books to choose from many are series starts or trilogies

Bit sneaky I notice a couple of cheap Whispersyncs in there that you wouldn't spend a credit on for example A Cold Day for Murder: A Kate Shugak Mystery or Tilt-a-Whirl by Chris Grabenstein

I used to work at Pizza Hut. The little kids used to come in with their little Book It certificates. They were always so excited and so cute!
I'm thinking it was a different time. I'm not sure kids get thrilled over a personal pan pizza any more....

Pizza Hut Pizza is pretty bad but it beats Domino's. I prefer to make my own with chicken, garlic, mushrooms and spinach on a whole wheat crust with a honey Dijon mustard sauce.

$3.95 -- The King of Lies -- John Hart/ David Chandler --> 13.0 hrs/ R-3.8 --> suspense

Quote:
Whispersync: no deals at this time

John Hart creates a literary thriller that is as suspenseful as it is poignant, a riveting murder mystery layered beneath the southern drawl of a humble North Carolina lawyer. When Work Pickens finds his father murdered, the investigation pushes a repressed family history to the surface and he sees his own carefully constructed facade begin to crack.

Work's troubled sister, her combative girlfriend, his gold digging socialite wife, and an unrequited lifelong love join a cast of small town characters that create no shortage of drama in this extraordinary, fast-paced suspense novel.

Hart's mastery of prose and plot belie his newcomer status as he explores the true heart of a man. An illuminating anatomy of a murder and the ripple effect it produces within a family and a community, The King of Lies is a stunning debut.

$3.95 -- The Story of My Teeth -- Valeria Luiselli/ A Durán, et al --> 4.1 hrs/ R-3.4 --> literary

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($3.99) | Kindle ($8.57)

The story of "Highway" Sanchez - bon vivant, world traveler, auctioneer - and his teeth is like Johnny Cash meets Robert Walser in Mexico.

"I was born in Pachuca, the Beautiful Windy City, with four premature teeth and my body completely covered in a very fine coat of fuzz. But I'm grateful for that inauspicious start because ugliness, as my other uncle, Euripides Lopez Sanchez, was given to saying, is character forming." Gustavo "Highway" Sanchez is a late-in-life world traveler, yarn spinner, collector, and legendary auctioneer. His most precious possessions are the teeth of the "notorious infamous", like Plato, Petrarch, and Virginia Woolf. Written in collaboration with the workers at a Jumex juice factory, The Story of My Teeth is an elegant, witty, exhilarating romp through the industrial suburbs of Mexico City and Luiselli's own literary influences.

Pizza Hut Pizza used to be good. But now they don't even make their own crust, it comes in frozen pucks. Their salad bar used to be fresh prepped every morning too. What a shame. They had to cut cost to stay in business, and by cutting cost they lost business.
But, promoting reading is good, so at least there is that!

If this book sells well, I'm thinking about writing a book about my teeth, too. Maybe I can make some money to help defray the cost of some very expensive dental work that I've got coming up . . . . ha

Breathless in Love --> Maverick Billionaires Series (book 1 of 3)

Whispersync: Audible ($1.99) | Kindle ($4.99)

Meet the Maverick Billionaires, an exciting and emotional contemporary romance series about sexy, self-made men from the wrong side of town who survived hell together and now have everything they ever wanted. But when each Maverick falls head-over-heels for an incredible woman he never saw coming, he will soon find that true love is the only thing he ever really needed....

Will Franconi has a dark past that he's kept a closely guarded secret; very few people have ever heard his real story, and he plans to keep it that way. After surviving a hellish childhood, he's now living the dream life, where everything he touches turns to gold. But something's missing. He doesn't quite know what until a simple letter from a teenage boy brings Harper Newman into his life. A woman who just might fill up the empty places inside him...if only he could ever be worthy of her love.

When a man has more money than he could possibly spend in five lifetimes, Harper has to ask herself what Will Franconi could possibly want from a woman like her. She's learned the hard way that rich men always get what they want no matter the cost. If it was just herself she had to worry about, Harper would manage, but she's guardian to her younger brother, who depends on her for everything. After nearly losing his life in a car crash, she's vowed never to let anyone hurt him ever again. Still, sometimes Harper can't help but long to change her story from one of an always-cautious woman to an adventurous tale of a heroine who's wild and free...especially when Will's kisses and caresses make her utterly breathless. And as he begins to reveal his story to her, she discovers that he's so much more than just another wealthy, privileged man. He's kind and giving, and he fills up all the spaces inside of her heart that have been empty for so long. Together can they rewrite their stories into a happily ever after that neither of them had previously thought was possible?
