I enjoyed the Nathan Lowell audiobooks as podcasts. There is an option to tip the author, not obtrusive but it's there. I bought the ebooks too, so that was a freebie that cost me a little bit. Well worth it.

Audible have a scifi special going on. Selected books are $6.95 for members. I picked up the C.J. Cherry, Pride of Chanur book 1. There is also a Liaden book I know I will succumb to.

The Liaden book is Carpe Diem. (And you can post a link by highlighting the link text (Carpe Diem in the above), and clicking the hyperlink button (a world with a chain link) in the button bar. Man, it's getting close - not much time now. Just a week and a half and Sync is here. To help you pass the time here's another in our ongoing discussion of lesser-known audiobook (or sort-of audiobook) sources.

You know, Sync is more than audiobooks. Included in every year's batch (and this year is no exception) are recorded, multi-cast plays. We've had BBC Shakespeare, LA Theatre Works productions, and other such titles. This sort of thing was what got me into audiobooks initially - sort of my gateway drug.

I'm a big fan of Dr. Who from way back, and before the BBC brought the show back there was a company that got the license to do Dr. Who audio plays. This was the beginning of Big Finish, and the end of me having a lot of free cash (hence my interest in free audiobooks). Today Big Finish continues to make Dr. Who, but has also branched out into other adaptations of classic television, literature, and even original fantasy.

There are not a lot of freebies floating around Big Finish's website. They do, however, have an official Soundcloud page. They use it to post trailers and podcasts about upcoming releases. Scattered around these posts are a few complete offerings, mostly from promotional releases that are no longer available for sale. If you go here you'll be able to sample just a taste of why they leave me broke from time to time. If you're a Dr. Who fan in particular I highly recommend them.

Showed up on my account, but not my husband's. We both qualified. I won't bother Audible yet, they have the rest of the day to distribute the credit.

BTW some books seem to come and go in the Whispersync program. I'd swear the 2nd and 3rd books of the Beautiful Creatures series were whispersync audiobooks and now they're not.

Have you checked your local library to see if they have the Amazon books to loan through Overdrive? I just found out recently that if you borrow a book that way from a library, Amazon treats it like a purchase and so you become eligible to get the audiobook at the Whispersync price. I've already saved several dollars.

Another thing that I'm working on is getting library cards from other nearby libraries which have reciprocal agreements with my local library (in these cases, at least, the cards are free). Other libraries choose to purchase particular books through Overdrive that my local library doesn't, so I get to check out those, too, and buy the Whispersync editions of them also if I choose to do so.
