I could not get through The Difference Engine, and it wasn't for lack of trying. I found the premise intriguing but just got bogged down in the actual book and gave up.

Perdido Street Station is next on my TBR list.

Not pleasure reading, I'm afraid. It's one of 8 sci fi/fantasy books I have to plow through in the next 2 months and write critical analyses of for my MFA program.

Good luck with Perdido. I was recommended that book by so many people when it came out and I've never been more bored reading in my life (well, maybe that's an over exaggeration).

Currently re-reading: Kafka on the Shore and After Dark by Haruki Murakami, plus assorted short stories of Eudora Welty and Katherine Anne Porter

I have a strange relationship with Welty. Being from the South, but being educated and liberal, I despise all of those old down home stereotypes, even though I am one. However, as she is Southern and her writings remind us of our grandmothers, her work is assigned reading from high school all the way through college. The thing is this: I Love Her!

A stream of pure truth runs through all of the cornbread and syrup in her stories. For instance, a woman decides that she is fed up with the way things are going at home, so she moves into the post office building and takes control of her own life. That should be required reading in every home for battered women all across the nation. It is empowering.

I'm most fond of the music in her writing (which always attracts me more than story or plot). There's a rhythm to the language, which I assume is part of the same musical rhythms of the 'southern' accent. I don't know full how to explain it, because I can't give a solid example, its more of an overall impression. I also love cornbred and syrup in my stories (yes I'm an unashamed sentimentalist)

Just finished 'The Salomon Scandals' which David Rothman emailed me after the NOVA Meet Up last month. Good read and interesting to go through a book that takes place where you live for a change.

Next up Brad Thor and 'The Lions of Lucerne'.

These gadgets were made special for the show by this guy who converts modern gadgets into steampunk versions - esp. keyboards. Sells them on ebay - pricey but gorgeous. Take a look at his website if you liked what you saw.

I've seen that guy's stuff! It is great art! Too bad about the planned obsolescence...

Some time back I started reading steampunk - and being a curious sort - did some Googling - and found the Datamancer website. He began by re-using the round keys from vintage typewriters - grafting them onto those old HEAVY IBM keyboards. And has since branched out in many different themes.
Due to the labor intensive nature of these creations, he sells them for a lot of money - esp. if they get bid up on ebay. He also takes private commissions.

He now has a blog - and announced he had been chosen to contribute funky items to the new ScyFy show.

BTW - it seems that steampunk is highly under-represented in ebook form - China Mieville only recently became available.

On the wattpad homepage go to featured works then there you'll find War Against Them.
Either you can read it online there or you can download the full offline e-book version for your mobile.
They have their own book reader software for mobile.

Check out http://m.wattpad.com from your mobile to download.
They don't have any PC version of the reader software. Hope this help you!

Tell me about it

I am randomly contacting various publishers and authors about it and have so far got a "we're thinking about it", "not a chance, matey" and an "it's in my publisher's hands"

I'm also hoping that a steam primer, intended to give steampunks a basic grounding in steam technology etc, actually comes to fruition (the chap doing it is a convert to ebooks, so it should be in at least a format the Sony 505 can read )

I just finished a bunch of romance novels that were in my tbr pile. My 14 yo complained about being bored today, and my dh and I turned him on to Stephenson's Snow Crash. I gave him the p version, and now I think I will join him and re-read my eversion. It's not really steampunk, but has a similar feeling, I think.
