No, it is the 'update bridge' code added by the installation of the 'hotfix' package (Step #6), the link labeled: "Jailbreak Survival Code". (I really hid that one, didn't I?)
It is open source code, you can convert the package to a compressed archive with KindleTool and then examine all parts of the contents.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, Kindles recognized a key name file at the top of USB storage:
ENABLE_DIAGS
And the next time they booted, they booted the 'diags' system rather than the 'main' system (Series 5 Kindles are dual-boot).

RP, the rescue pack restores that functionality and also installs a ssh server in the 'diags' system (something that was once a standard part of the 'diags' system).

This gives the user a chance to recover the Kindle from most causes of 'failure to operate' conditions.

Which has always puzzled me, they have to read the answers, so why not save time and read the directions to begin with?

I thought the issue was that when you put the update_KV_5.5.0_initial.bin on there the Kindle just deletes it rather than update, but the 'Update Your Kindle' option was not greyed out so everything worked fine. Maybe 5.8.9.0.1 is some version only used in shipping? I dunno. He's up and running on 5.8.9.2 with jailbreak in tact now though.

Received my kindle paperwhite today - firmware 5.8.9.0.1. Serial #: G090G1...

Went through jailbreak process described in first post and it seems like it's a success!

I was hesitant to try but your post made me think maybe this is just a re-named older firmware version that's somehow unaccounted for...

With some very rare exceptions back in the non-touchscreen days, that is a complete list of every firmware version ever built (and shipped from the USA).

What country was it purchased in? (Country sold from, seller's country)
What country was it delivered to? (Country sold to, purchaser's country)
Post the first six (6) characters of the serial number please.

There have been a few "Country Specific" firmwares in the past, this might be another one.
And at least one of them could be jail broken although by the USA based rules, it should not have been possible.

Purchased via amazon in Canada.
Serial #: G090G1 etc.

I do believe it is some country-specific firmware because the label makes reference to both Brazil and Mexico. ('imported by...' etc.)

Least I could do - thanks to everyone here who made it work.

I should mention I did this on a linux system, and at first when I plugged it in to charge, the device wasn't recognized. It was still charging, just couldn't see any files. I had to unplug and plug it back in again then it was fine.

I didn't get very far. I did a factory reset and now the screen on the pw3 for me to choose the language even though I've plugged it into my iMac. Finder is not seeing the kindle so I can't install the bin file onto it.

Am I supposed to continue with the kindle setup? Wouldn't just add the personalization back into the kindle?

I selected the language and that allowed me to get to a screen where I could plug in the kindle to the mac and get it recognized. Copied the bin file in and now it's making be connect to wifi and register the kindle. Am I doing all the personalization that the reset wiped out?

Start over.
Follow the instructions exactly. Click on all spoilers. On the MAC, you will need to temporarily disable the function that prevents tar balls.

After the reset the kindle paused at a screen, I plugged it into my mac and I have been able to copy the bin file into then top directory. Now ready to do the install.

Found a place to cancel setting up the kindle, chose that, so supposedly it's not personalized now. However the "Update You Kindle" option is greyed out.

I appreciate any help received and I'll pause here and wait for some suggestions on what I should do.
