Moriah by Daniel Mills is $2.99 on Amazon.com
Video review by SFF180
Quote:
Silas Flood is a broken man in a broken country. Nine years have passed since the end of the American Civil War and Flood is helpless to escape its shadow.

In the summer of 1874, he is dispatched to the mountain village of Moriah, Vermont to investigate sensational claims of supernatural happenings. There the brothers Thaddeus and Ambrose Lynch are said to converse with spirits and summon the dead.

As Flood investigates the true nature of these phenomena, and the difference between the hauntings of the living and the dead, he must first come to terms with his own past and with the hold it has upon him—before he can behold the mysteries of the other side.

This may be a stretch to label as Horror but in my book it's close enough, though I have not read it.

Rooster by John C. Foster
Amazon US$0.99
Quote:
John Gallo is a professional hitman with a history that’s spattered in blood and littered with bodies. Known in the criminal underworld as Rooster, Gallo is an assassin suffering from mental illness and constantly battling the black dog of depression that stalks him. When able to crawl out of his downward spiral and throw himself into the job, he’s a proficient, stealthy and unforgiving killer. A relentless wheeler-dealer in the game of death.

But now he finds there’s a price on his head. A vendetta that could have been placed by anyone in the gangland underground. And everyone wants to collect. From two-bit street punks to the highest echelons of organized crime. The Mafia. Yakuza. Russians. Chinese. Every crime syndicate that’s ever been on the bullet-end of his gun is now taking aim at him, intent on ending the reign of the Rooster.

After making a fast break from New York with a young actress rescued from certain death at the hands of the Chinese mob, Rooster is on the run and headed to his native Boston and promised refuge with his on-again, off-again criminal associate Grace. He quickly learns Beantown’s dark underbelly is only interested in welcoming Rooster home so thugs and gangsters can line up to seize the prize that is his head.

Determined to solve the mystery of who wants him dead and exact his own revenge, Rooster uncovers a deadly plot with tendrils that stretch across the country, revealing a conspiracy designed to achieve the ultimate retribution.

I already own the Norman Prentriss title, but I have yet to read it.

Both the Ken Start and John Bender titles look great. Looks like I'll have to buy them.

Thanks!

Count me as well. There's several spin-off titles to Life in a Haunted House (incidentally, I don't think this book is really horror, though the spin-offs are). Life in a Haunted House spin-offs

Slash by Hunter Shea
Amazon US $0.99

Quote:
Five years after Ashley King survived the infamous Resort Massacre, she’s found hanging in her basement by her fiancé, Todd Matthews. She left behind clues as to what really happened that night, clues that may reveal the identity of the killer the press has called The Wraith. With the help of his friends, Todd goes back to the crumbling Hayden Resort, a death-tinged ruin in the Catskills Mountains. What they find is a haunted history that’s been lying in wait for a fresh set of victims. The Wraith is back, and he’s nothing what they expected.

This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno is $2.99 on Amazon.com

“This intense cosmic horror with a touch of Mexican American folklore is incredibly creepy and moving.” —Margaret Kingsbury, BuzzFeed

Content warning: Violence towards a dog. One Goodreads user says "The dog stuff is pretty graphic and upsetting. It plays a major role in the story so you might want to skip this book."

Quote:
It was Vera’s idea to buy the Itza. The “world’s most advanced smart speaker!” didn’t interest Thiago, but Vera thought it would be a bit of fun for them amidst all the strange occurrences happening in the condo. It made things worse. The cold spots and scratching in the walls were weird enough, but peculiar packages started showing up at the house—who ordered industrial lye? Then there was the eerie music at odd hours, Thiago waking up to Itza projecting light shows in an empty room.

It was funny and strange right up until Vera was killed, and Thiago’s world became unbearable. Pundits and politicians all looking to turn his wife’s death into a symbol for their own agendas. A barrage of texts from her well-meaning friends about letting go and moving on. Waking to the sound of Itza talking softly to someone in the living room . . .

The only thing left to do was get far away from Chicago. Away from everything and everyone. A secluded cabin in Colorado seemed like the perfect place to hole up with his crushing grief. But soon Thiago realizes there is no escape—not from his guilt, not from his simmering rage, and not from the evil hunting him, feeding on his grief, determined to make its way into this world.

A bold, original horror novel about grief, loneliness and the oppressive intimacy of technology, This Thing Between Us marks the arrival of a spectacular new talent.

Is there an article somewhere that says which Koontz books are the best ones? I've only read one but hear they're a mixed bag.

Yeah, the main book LIFE IN A HAUNTED HOUSE is a coming-of-age story that I wrote as a kind of love letter to low-budget horror movies, and to monster-movie magazines. The 4 tie-ins are "novelizations" of the horror films by the book's fictional director.

I read his standalone books and didn't get into his series. I remember loving Whispers (probably his breakout book), Phantoms, and Watchers, the most. And Midnight. Watchers has one of his most famous dog characters. Other fans loved Strangers, Twilight Eyes, and Lightning -- and I have to get around to reading those.

I enjoyed some of his earlier stuff, like The Face of Fear, The Vision, Night Chills, and The Key to Midnight -- but they may not have aged well. Especially the villain in Night Chills (read reviews that hint at content warnings) and the emphasis on outdated studies on the evils of subliminal advertising.

These are my kind of books.

If they touch in some way upon Castle of Frankenstein, Universal pictures, low-budget horror -- then I'm in. Absolutely!

Thank you!

Twilight Eyes is the one I've read. I had mixed feelings about it but stayed open to reading something else by him.

Couldn't find the beginning of this conversation but it's drawn my attention now. I've always been a fan of Hammer Horror and other Horror B-movies. Ed Wood is my hero!
