I finally have The Martian by Andrew Weir. Better late than never. This book is really highly recommended by everyone although I don't get my hopes extremely high since I'm dipping into the unsual Sci-Fi waters.

After finishing Simak's A Heritage of Stars - which feels very Golden Age, despite being written in 1977 - I've decided Varley's The Ophiuchi Hotline is the logical next book. Same general concept, written in the same year, but I think it'll have a much more "modern" feel to it. If nothing else, the two approaches should be interesting to compare.

I'm not a big SciFi fan either but thoroughly enjoyed this one. Like the movie Gravity, it's science fiction not science fantasy. Be interested in what you think.

Reading Tom Holt's When It's a Jar. I'm not sure why I had never heard of Tom Holt before, but I'm really enjoying this and I really enjoyed the preceeding book Doughnut.

Which was excellent. Sometimes a few of the stories are not to my taste, but I liked everything in this issue. 5/5

And now for my very latest purchase: The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker.

The Martian is very dramatic, and I think accessible to even non-scifi readers, we'll see, huh?

I enjoyed The Golem and the Jinni, too.

Today is the first day of World Literature (since Rennaisance), so I am browsing through Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern.

This is a good choice for a first venture. It's "near" in that the location (Mars) and time (could be 10-20 years) are close to where & when we are living. So it doesn't require any serious stretch of the imagination. It feels almost contemporary. And that may be why it was so widely acclaimed.

Oh, then you still have quite a bit of fun ahead of you. Flying Dutch is one of my favorites, and the J.W. Wells sequence (starting with The Portable Door) is quite good. Just remember that he has written some serious fiction, like the Lucia books.

You may also want to investigate Jasper Fforde's work, if you haven't already.

I have to remember to bump this back up on my TBR. I started it in November or December, but set it down as I was still in my reading slump.

Interesting I always prefer to do the book first where possible. If I do it the other way I sometimes loose enthusiasm to read the book.
