Interesting quote, but I doubt it was said by Franklin. Benjamin Franklin died in 1790. The name Bacterium was coined by Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg in 1828. Franklin would have more likely called them "animalcules", the name given bacteria by their discoverer Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in 1676.
