Coyote Waits is the tenth in the Leaphorn and Chee series by Tony Hillerman. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I'm quite fond of this series, not least because my dad's family is from this area, so I recognize a lot of the settings and places in the books.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Coyote-Waits-...dp/B000FC119M/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/coyote-waits

Spoiler:
Quote:
The car fire didn't kill Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez—a bullet did. And the old man in possession of the murder weapon is a whiskey-soaked shaman named Ashie Pinto. Officer Jim Chee is devastated by the slaying of his good friend Del, and confounded by the prime suspect's refusal to utter a single word of confession or denial.

Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn believes there is much more to this outrage than what appears on the surface, as he and Jim Chee set out to unravel a complex weave of greed and death that involves a historical find and a lost fortune. But the hungry and mythical trickster Coyote is waiting, as always, in the shadows to add a strange and deadly new twist.

Easy knows that this could only mean that the ex-marine Black is probably dead, or will be soon. Easter's appearance is only the beginning, as Easy is immersed in a sea of problems. The love of his life is marrying another man and his friend Mouse is wanted for the murder of a father of 12. As he's searching for a clue to Christmas Black's whereabouts, two suspicious MPs hire him to find his friend Black on behalf of the U.S. Army. The Sinister Pig is the 16th in the Leaphorn/Chee series by Tony Hillerman. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Sinister-Leap...dp/B000FC13SQ/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-sinister-pig

Spoiler:
Quote:
The victim, well dressed but stripped of identification, is found at the edge of the vast Jicarilla Apache natural gas field just inside the jurisdiction of the Navajo Tribal Police, facing Sergeant Jim Chee with a complex puzzle.

Why did the Washington office of the FBI snatch custody of this case from its local agents, cover it with secrecy, and call it a hunting accident? What was the victim seeking among the maze of pipelines and pumping stations in America's largest gas field? Was he investigating the embezzlement of billions of dollars from the Indian Tribal royalty trust in the Department of the Interior?

On a level nearer to Chee's heart, did the photographs Bernie Manuelito took on an exotic game ranch near the Mexican border reveal something connected with this crime? Did Bernie, once a member of Chee's squad but now a rookie Border Patrol Officer, put herself in terrible danger?

Tony Hillerman leads his readers through another of his intricate plots to the solution of this crime, with a cast of vivid characters: a Washington political mogul and his more-or-less renegade pilot; a customs official who bends the rules; a Mexican smuggler with a conscience; and, finally, "Legendary Lieutenant" Joe Leaphorn, now retired, who connects the lines on a dusty old map to find the answers -- and the Sinister Pig -- among the great scimitar-horned oryx grazing on the historic Tuttle Ranch.

Tracing the money’s origins will take Liza on a journey that will end in Cochise County, where Sheriff Joanna Brady is embroiled in a personal mystery of her own. A man she considers a family friend is found dead at the bottom of a hole in a limestone cavern near Bisbee. And now there is the mystery of Liza and the money. Are the two disparate cases connected? It’s up to Joanna to find out.

YW!

I've never read this series, but did buy the first one at $0.99 a while back. Maybe I'll give it a try, although my TBR pile is insanely high...

Samson's Deal is the first in the Jake Samson & Rosie Vicente series by Shelley Singer. It is free right now at Kindle US. This has been free before in the omnibus, Such A Deal: Three Nice Jewish Detectives, as well as free on its own a long time ago, IMS, but free is free, so who cares!

link: https://www.amazon.com/Samsons-Deal-...dp/B00DDU756Q/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Samson's Deal: The Jake Samson Series Book 1

Samson's Deal is the FIRST book in the “wonderfully wry” adventures of ex-cop Jake Samson by award-winning author Shelley Singer.
“Breathtaking action is offset by the wise-cracking Jake and Rosie. The tension will keep you reading all night long. Compelling characterization by Singer makes this series a must-read, with authentic details and witty dialogue.” -Mystery Time

Library Journal said: “Great bar scenes, a wonderfully wry narrative, and the obvious affection between Jake and Rosie will have readers clamoring for more.”

MURDER, POLITICS, AND STRANGE BEDFELLOWS...

Ex-Chicago-cop Jake Samson’s likely to lead with his easy-going Columbo style, but he’s earned a reputation for being a tough guy who occasionally “handles discreet matters.” Samson is drawn into Berkeley’s political hotbed when an old friend--a progressive political science professor--calls with an enticing offer. Seems the professor's wife was found dead in the backyard of their Berkeley home, and he wants to pay Jake ten thousand dollars (plus expenses) to figure out whodunit.

The police pick up the usual leads: jealousy, dirty politics, and an estate worth killing for. Naturally, since the professor is the dead woman's spouse, he's the primary suspect. Samson doesn't like the guy much, but the case heats up—quite literally—when the professor's office is set afire by a radical right wing activist group, of which, it turns out, the wife was a member.

With his good friend Rosie, and her justice-dispensing two-by-four, Samson follows a twisted trail that leads through the Bay Area's bizarre cultural labyrinth, from pop meditation ashrams to neo-Nazi rallies, to the startling but all too human truth.

"Singer has a good ear for dialogue among the witless … It's fun to watch [Jake and Rosie] work together, and the bad guys eventually get their satisfying comeuppance, after an interesting plot twist that keeps things hopping till the very end." —San Francisco Bay Guardian

I got the first one on sale, several years ago. The characters' relationships evolve, so I do recommend reading this series in order. At least, that's how I'm doing it.
