![]() I fail to see what the fluidity of data has even tangentially to do with Microsoft's telemetry. I am quite fond of fluidity of data, as it happens. But I certainly didn't need Microsoft to supply me with that with Windows 10 (and as I'm sure you know, it would be sad if I did, since I don't actually use anything Microsoft and therefore wouldn't be able to do it). @DuckieTigger, I still don't see what that has to do with what I said. But if we are going to wander all over the place anyway, how about this: you suggested others emulate me, and don't use Windows. Did you not see how I already preempted and answered that? ... I am fine with Google et al. doing it -- you can trivially opt out and use, say, DuckDuckGo. How do you opt out of a pre-installed, heavily controlled market, that **forcibly** upgrades you to Windows 10? Not everyone who cares, has the skills to install a new operating system. |

@eschwartz: You can opt out of Google & friends? How do you propose to navigate the web without search engines that are advertising companies as well? Dependence on search engines is just as real as dependence on Windows for most everybody.

@ eschwartz
Your tl;dr exactly. Especially as they (MS) first said that the sniffing is essential for maintaining functionality and thus not to be completely turned off but THEN said, enterprise customers will be able to do just that. If pro customers can live without then it's everything but not essential. I already thought it's fishy when I read that even pirated copies will be updated. TANSTAAFL. It's far beyond fishy. They could run a 'sponsored by SeaLife' banner. As someone already said (afair regarding FB and such): "People receiving services in exchange for their data are not a company's customers, they are livestock." That's why they try to shove that 'update' down everybody's and his brother's throat. MS is turning the Windows user base into livestock. An operating system should be just that. |

There is no chance that Windows will ever be running on every device I own. I don't need everything looking the same. I don't want everything running the same. If Microsoft pushes that too far, they are more likely to find me switching to Mac or Linux than picking up a Windows phone.

Anyway, it is ("should" be a) well-known fact that even magic has rules, though granted you get to play with a set of rules that are a lot higher up in the grand scheme of things. |

You are avoiding the question. You are refering to "people that care about privacy don't always know how to install a different OS?" There is no difference in difficulty for majority of people to opt out of a OS or a search engine's unwanted data collection. |

In the main I agree with him, an OS stored on My computer in My house shouldn't automatically try and grab data from me. After removing the cloud synch and turning off all the available data grab options I was very surprised to find out that half of them had turned back on after a forced update. |

It's a whole lot easier to to invoke a different search engine, (a la key in a web address) than to install a different operating system, and reacquire software (at app level), and learn the new software's quirks. Otherwise you are an unpaid beta tester for Microsoft, for the benefit of their corporate customers, for the rest of your life. It's ok, if that's what you want to be. (There are lots of voluntary beta testers out there, but they are voluntary, not dragooned into it.) But everybody ought to be aware of what they are, and quite frankly, be given a choice of not being a beta tester, even if that is a extra cost option. OTOH, I'm just an old dinosaur. . . |

![]() @DuckieTigger, perhaps it is clearer now that I edited my post to remove the last sentence from the quote -- rather than including the whole paragraph by default. Mind you, I am still not sure why it must be so confusing to grasp what I mean the first time around... Can't see the forest for the trees, perhaps? The people complaining want only one thing: a switch called "Turn off data collection", which turns off *ALL* data collecting capabilities. And no, switching to a different operating system is not an option for most people. Apple basically does the same thing (but to a lesser extent), and Linux is not an alternative for many. Even Windows 8.1 and 7 are retro-fitted with reporting capabilities and telemetry, by the way. |
