Especially when you consider that the Jewish men who wrote the gospels were writing about things they heard happened (none of the gospels having been written contemporaneously), not things they witnessed personally.

So, the whole swine episode might not have happened exactly as written, even assuming that Jesus was able to cure an insane man. I am convinced that there is (as there should be) a Jewish cultural bent to much of the New Testament.

But, had I been there and had a word with Jesus beforehand, I would have suggested that he cast the demon(s) into a whirlwind and then to dissipate it into the upper atmosphere. It would have had just the right touch of theatricality ... but nobody gets hurt.

Actually, two of the writers WERE there personally, although yes, the gospels were written down some years later. Matthew and John, I believe, were among the 12 guys who hung around with the nailed-tree guy.

Yes, but none of them were contemporaneous ... really more my point. And, there is no way of telling who was actually personally on hand at each event. In fact, they all write about things that would have happened when none of them were there (temptation in the wilderness ... etc). Further, memories of events change (sometimes radically) over time.

Now, had they taken roll call for each miracle (John? Here!, Matthew? Here!), and written it as more of a "Hey, I was there and saw this personally" ... that would at least be something. Although, I doubt it would have read as well.

Although, my favorite books aren't even in the New Testament (I especially dislike all of Paul's Epistles .... but then I dislike Paul), for light reading, I really prefer the Torah.

I wonder if the videogame being advertised on the bottom of the page has a religious theme? Maybe it was swine and whirlwinds that triggered it....

Just handed in my term paper. Going to go home and sleep for about a week. Still no power, no hot water. I'm very glad we bought a wood stove last winter, but we're getting tired of having to get up and feed it every 2 hours.

I don't think a hand pump would work for the water. The well is more than 32 feet deep. That's the limit if you want to pump from the top, right? Maybe we could have a bicycle-powered generator just for the well....

Eh, I've got to wander back out into the cold and walk the Millers' dogs. At the moment, my arms and legs feel like lead. I've gotten a lot done today, but as a result, I am tired to the bone.

I am seriously considering making this another early night. Feed the cats, give the doggies their evening treat, take a shower and go to bed. If y'all don't hear from me again tonight. ... that's where I'll be.

I'm contemplating quitting my job and opening VR's Bed & Bacon - some place where the out-of-towners can stay when they come to visit The Lounge. Since no one is really quite sure where The Lounge is located, that would include all of us. Of course, that makes it problematic finding a good location for said B&B. But anyway, I was thinking of offering cozy couches for sleeping (the first B) and, of course, hearty bacon breakfasts (the second B). Doughnuts would be offered to the vegetarian guests in lieu of bacon (and I get what you don't eat).

But I wanted it to be a really special place by adding a few extras. Like loaner eink liseusesueseuses (whatever) for all guests. These, the eink.....things, would be preloaded with all your favorite Vera stories. There would be plentiful snacks handy including lots of chocolate and, in the evening, we would offer plenty of Zany Carter Deluxes and Zany Carter Patricias. I'm not sure, but I might want to limit the number of those per day per guest. Maybe we'll just leave one per guest next their pillow as a nighty night treat.

But then there should be special programs for different days of the week. For example, I was thinking of Trebuchet Tuesdays where we would give practical instructions on how to design, construct, and operate these incredible devices to launch all sorts of objects (but not pirate ninja squirrels). We might even have a contest each week. Oh, by the way, clotted cream would definitely NOT be served on Tuesdays so as to avoid any mishaps. I haven't worked out the other specials for the other days of the week. And I'm still considering furnishings, decor, amenities, etc.

So whaddaya think? Should I go ahead and quit my job now and start?

Hmmm.... I'd recommend against Panama, too much pollution. (I have friends from there.) California has too many taxes. Hawaii...Too expensive and nobody'd want to stay around the house and read anyway... Florida, too many hurricanes... How about Corpus Christi, Texas. Beach on one side and plenty of scrub for target practice on the other.

Will you have internet? (I don't see how you could not, given that it's meant to be in proximity to the Lounge.) If so, I'm with Patricia-- I don't think I'd ever leave.

We have power at our house now! But still no internet. I'm at work right now, but they've closed the campus due to the upcoming storm expected here today, so I'm leaving soon. We might get internet back this weekend. My health is much better (thanks to the miraculous powers of a steamy hot shower) and my mood has also improved since my papers are now done. So whenever I get internet again, I should be back, sunny and cheerful as usual.

I'm so glad that you're feeling better, Neko.
But you're expecting another storm?
I never dreamt that NH was so inhospitable.
