I'm with you guys on this one too. Kobo is sending me whatever I need to ship mine back to them for an exchange, but I'm kind of thinking I'll hold off until the update to see how it goes. And as for what exactly will be fixed, I hope it's everything you mentioned, artificial!

I'm taking mine back tomorrow because of this. Now I'm getting utterly paradoxical results. Works for a week on one charge. Recharge fully (i.e. for hours -- battery gauge shows full, but of course the red light never comes on). 200 or so page turns (in an ePub file), battery shows 3/4. Switch it off overnight. Turn it on in the morning, shows "E" but keeps on working. Turn it back on in the afternoon and it shows full. Sheesh.

I wish Kobo had mentioned the battery fix earlier. I've already returned my Kobo (in store) and I'm waiting for my new one to come in. On a related note, because of my emails with Kobo they also sent me a package to pack up and return my reader. I'm having way too much fun with the bubble wrap. :P

I may be cynical but, first it was days/weeks for the firmware update (11th of March post on twitter), then by Borders launch (2nd of June shipped for some people?), then middle of June, now end of June.

Duke Nukem Forever anyone?

My trust in this company is rapidly dwindling.

From the Kobo Facebook discussion on battery life:

Kobo Hey folks,

We've just been informed that the fixes being addressed are the battery indicator light, as well as fixing (or rather, extending) the battery life.

Well, it's good to know they are doing some optimization to extend battery life, I really wasn't expecting this in the first firmware update. But after all the battery life complaints (which probably resulted in lots of returns/exchanges), I can see why they would want to address this quickly.

I also think this means they will certainly tweak the battery gauge problems as well, since I'm sure the inaccuracy and the fact that it only updates on boot-up has caused much (unnecessary) grief.

Artificial -- according to my friend, the answer is all of the above. Their first update turned out bigger than they initially planned, but they are looking to close some issues for good.

I've been doing pretty good so far with battery. I've read 4 or 5 200+ page books on a single charge. My only problems is the opposite of what some people say. The red light won't go off when I'm charging.

I think I'm a little spoiled when it comes to battery life. I use my iPod at the same time and while I've charged my Kobo 4 or 5 times I've only charged my iPod 2 times.

Since hearing about battery life problems will be fixed in the next update I really hope I'll be able to read even longer.

It is a common misconception that red light is supposed to go off when the device is charged. This is not correct. In the manual it states that the red light will come ON once the device is fully charged.

Perhaps they meant that a firmware update would not address your specific battery issues? An alternative explanation is that the low level reps were just reporting what they were told or could guess themselves, and now we have word from the higher ups that a firmware update will actually help some battery life issues.

That would be my guess. A rep who is authorised to post in their Facebook discussion threads would be speaking with more authority than someone answering support emails. I hope.

Then my Kobo is charged in about five minutes after it's been drained. I would like for it to be fixed in an update.
