Very nice Helen, it looks very tropical, quite unlike the frost on the ground here this morning.

We don't have a garden since we live in a condo, so I walked the dog around the block and stole other peoples gardens.

The air is perfumed with the scent of lilac.

Focus and depth of view isn't always so great, it being hard to focus with a dog pulling on the end of her leash. I'm not even sure I got some of the photos oriented the right way (portrait/landscape). You should at least get a sense of how colourful it is in our neighbourhood.

Offsite photos of ==>late spring colours.

Hehe, thanks, Tom and Dave. Of course, as soon as I posted those pictures the sun went in and I had to close the kitchen door and put the heating on. Still, it's very pleasant - definitely no frost.

I even tried artichokes.
Hey, Beppe. How did you get on with that? It's quite common to grow globe artichokes (the thistles, rather than Jerusalem artichokes) in France - and I see you're in Italy - but it's not so common here, and they're really expensive in the shops.

Mind you, I agree with previous posters - I find it a bit too much trouble to grow vegetables, especially with the snails and slugs. Everyone in London went mad for growing vegetables last year - not just here, I gather than Michelle Obama has an 'allotment' at the White House - and we duly followed suit. The only plant that really thrived was the purple-sprouting broccoli.

They just fenced off about 1/3 of our "unofficial" off-leash doggie park to make a community garden. Right now it is just green grass with a fence around it. I think they just want to move the doggies along ... plants don't make as much noise.

Very nice! You don't need a garden of your own, with your neighbors doing all the work for you

they are extremely popular here. having the baby artichokes cut in half and sauteed is incredible! I'm going to try planting them for the first time this year

The opposite happened here in one community last year. They closed a long-time community garden (for no apparent reason).

Probably built condos...

artichokes: I got the cuttings from a friend and planted them, in a sheltered place. They need food, quite a lot and water, and heat. I had the spiny ones, that are more fragrant then the globe one. It's a huge bush. You pick the buds and eat them. We are in a marginal zone, being close to the lakes. They come nicely near the sea or at the latitude of Rome.

The way I prefer them is raw. cleaned from the points and the hard leaves (you put them in a bowl with water and lemon juice so that they do not blacken), Cut the long hearts in 4, take away the hairs and slice thinly. Olive oil and salt. Bread.

It's probably too hot to grow artichokes in Texas. I've never heard of anyone growing them here. But now I want to try...
