Kindle, B&N, & Kobo are all limited to just eBooks bought from the respective shops. I have ePub I have removed the DRM and fixed the formatting how I want it. I also may want specific embedded fonts. None of them work how I want. My 505 allows me to do what I want. It's not eink vs LCD, but closed (with limited functionality) vs being a lot more open to the way I work.

So once these issues are sorted, I'll look at the iPad. I do want something with a larger screen for reading. For more portable reading, I have my 505. I am surprised that iBooks is not fully functional to the ePub standard. |

gone for a few hours, look at the mess..
@kennyc, i call 'em like i see 'em. as many others have also pointed out, you don't have an ipad, you haven't even touched an ipad, i don't care about your background (and mine goes back just as far), your comments are only parroting what you've read elsewhere. you bash the ipad (and apple) at every opportunity and refuse to listen to any other opinion. you're simply trolling the apple forum to stir up trouble. kind of remind me of someone else i had this same issue with a few months ago (she was a troll too). she's on my ignore list and congrats, now so are you. i've been in the IT business for too long and seen the religious wars between mainframe hardware, desktop hardware, pda's, laptops, programming languages and more operating systems than i can even remember. what did i learn from my experience decades ago? it doesn't matter what hardware/software/company you love or hate, time is going to pass and things are going to change. computers come and go. software comes and goes. programming languages fade in and out of favor. manufacturers disappear off the planet. it's silly that some people latch themselves onto loving or hating a particular thing and can't see beyond that. i have owned and used more computer and electronic equipment than a medium sized company and my shiny toys from 10 years ago are collecting dust in a box in the basement now. if someone has nothing better to do with themselves but spend time and energy hating any particular device, company, operating system, etc. it's a sad thing, they need to get out in the world and go do something constructive, because in just a few years that thing is going to wind up in a box in the basement too and all that effort spent with it. people ask me "which XXXX do you like the best?" my reply: "any XXXX that you like that gets what you need done." there is no "best". there might be "better" but "best" today is just going to be replaced by "better" tomorrow. my ipad i'm enjoying very much today will be replaced by the ipad 2.0 next year, i'm positive of that one. the moral of this boys and girls, if you don't want to be called a troll, well, don't troll. ![]() @richman, yes. the weight of the ipad is significantly more than that of my sony 600. the 600 is easily held in one hand pretty much anywhere. however it is not easily held and operated with one hand, to turn pages you either need to juggle it with one hand, or use the other to press or swipe. so the ipad. i've adapted to holding it with one (but again you need two to operate it really) or propping it up or using the easel feature of the apple case i have. i will say an added bonus feature of the apple case, because of the rubbery material it is made from, it's relatively non-slip. i can prop it up on a glass tabletop against something else and it will not slip down in position on its own. so for one handed use, the ipad is always going to lose against something that is smaller and lighter, it even loses against the iphone/touch. that's the tradeoff for that beautiful big screen. interestingly, in ifixit's teardown of the ipad, they noted how it was perfectly balanced. apple designed the device so that weight was distributed evenly between front and back, and among all four edges. makes sense since you can rotate the device in any direction. if the weight was more on one side it would really unbalance holding it. |

if she just in effect used them as photos in a slideshow it should be fine as Im sure if all of peoples holiday pics were being shuffled on iPad then it would surely have been noted on the web. I have never had a prob with photos not being in the right holiday order on my iPhone? but yeh good point to try it out she could just put the images in a zip folder and then rename the .zip to .cbr and then drop into comic reader. |

For your information in iTunes you can put any epub book you want without DRM and they will show up for use on the iPad when you sync . Your formating will be respected but you have to live with the iPad's fonts... |

Many ereader owners just like to read ONLY
10 hour battery life with backlight is very cool,
The IPAD has changed the Ereader market, But I agree with others, IPAD is a kindle killer and every other ereader killer. I guess almost none of us read up to 10 hrs a day,but I would still prefer a ebook reader that i usually do not need to worry of charging for about 1 week (the average for most ereader user). This feature is especially nice if going for short-trip of 3-4 days where charger for the ereader need not be carried around (charger for the netbook, handphone, etc are already burdensome enough) It is really hope that the IPAD will 'jolt' the manufacturers of ereader to add-in more necessary features into the ereader 1.Touch screen (for turning pages) 2.effective search features 3.Dictionary link 4.Effective bookmarking features 5.Highlighting 6.Wifi Most of these features are mostly lacking in ereader (especially the lower priced type) Hence the IPAD will not be a ereader killer, this i am absolutely sure because i know that i will not be alone, millions will be like me, possibly will not buy a IPAD (not that it is not good, but it just does not satisfy what i want in a e-reader) Not everybody likes music, picture video, comic etc, some just like to read only! So just as a person (who loves beef) cannot tell someone else that he is stupid just because that someone does not like beef. Ereader owner should not be called stupid just because they like to read only but do not like music ,picture & video. With reference to 'coronary artery disease',who is more stupid ? a person who loves beef or a person who 'hates' beef' (all other coronary risk factors assume to be equal) ? |

Ok,
I broke down and bought an iPad ![]() Will it replace my PR505? I dont really think so. The battery, size and weight of my sony win the day. But I will read on my iPad? Some I think. If AAPL came out with 5-7" ipad, then I may consider giving up my sony. But not yet. Will ipad replace my netbook? Nope. Strangely enough the ipad does not really compete my netbook unlike what other people think. I think most of my utilization is going to be as a webpad. |

If I was to specify no margins, does iBook respect this and go to the edges of the iPad's screen? |

The iPad is not a killer of 6" eink readers. It's not yet a killer of larger screen readers that support ePub. But is is a Kindle DX killer given the Kindle app.
Someday it might be a larger screen reader killer (overall). But not now. |
