I have seen statistics. And the US has a much higher homicide rate than the UK. Actually, if you subtract homicides involving guns, the US still has a (~20%) higher rate than the UK.

And how exactly do you measure 'crimes prevented' that proves the existence of a firearm did the preventing. My guess would be I could find equally convincing arguments crimes are prevented by the existence of a fish.

Next you'll be telling us capital punishment is a crime preventer LOL
Weeeeellll... (This sub-thread is SO off-topic! ) capital punishment *IS* a crime preventer. (Unless you can show proof that an *executed* criminal has managed to plan and commit a crime *after* sentence has been carried out? Didn't think so! )

IOW, there is a 0% recidivism amongst executed criminals.

I finally figured out how to deal with my airport woes. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get Halle Berry to date me.

I'm surprised actually. I thought they would have run her through the new full body scans a couple hundred times.

Capital punishment doesn't work to prevent murder, but it would work great to prevent shop lifting!

I just spent a day in 3 airports, on 3 flights....no one said anything about my Reader-even during the "no electronics while landing" 15 minutes. But it was all in the US, and maybe they just didn't notice.

I doubt we have to worry about this. I'm not going to.

You were lucky then. On both flights to and from Vegas, we were specifically told that if an electronic device has an on/off switch it must be turned off until 10 minutes after take off. We even had to turn are cell phones completely off, no Airplane Mode, and the flight attendants were fairly militant about it. And let me tell you, the majority of passengers on both flights were attendees to the CES so it seemed a little ironic that we had to shut down our technology.

I actually accidentally had my cell phone all the way on both flights home this last go-round. thought for sure I had kept the button depressed long enough to turn it off and it didn't happen. it was in my cargo pocket. heard the texting chime upon landing the last time *oops*

The funny thing for me was that I have never turned off my Pre since purchasing it. There have been times when it has automatically rebooted after an update, but I haven't turned it off. Consequently, I couldn't remember how to do it. On the flight to Vegas, I left it in Airplane Mode and then figured it out once we landed. It just took holding the button down longer than I had previously tried in the heat of the moment.

But these are the standard rules and nothing new. When you hear the "ping" after take off you have reached cruising altitude and you can then turn on your phone to airplane mode. You have never been allowed to have the phone on during take off.

Very true but on my last flight to Cincinnati in October, I asked the flight attendant if I had to turn off my reader for take off and she told me, "No", so I happily read my ebook throughout take off and landing. This time, they specifically brought up the Kindle and said it and others like it had to be turned off. I was flying the same airline (United) both times. It's my feeling that someone somewhere decided to be more specific in their rules.

Possibly they realized many readers have some kind of wireless connectivity, and could interfere with whatever hardware the airplane has just like cellphones, and it's usually very inefficient for flight attendants to decide which models can be safely left on during takeoff?

I saw this last night and thought of this thread. It was on Canadian TV so I think it's safe for here.
