Shoot Robertb, I hate seeming like a hassle, but when you say this:
"I love the Metallic Purple also and I KNOW the problem is totally solved on what we have now in stock. You have my word that the colors are now safe to order. Every day I walk by them and rub about 10 of them hard to make sure." I'm desperate to just keep it as I ordered the purple, and dad is bringing it back over the border for me tonight, and I hate the thought of having to send him back with a shipping label in a week or so....So does that mean that because they've been sitting for a week or two undisturbed in your warehouse, you reckon they'll be okay, or have you brought in a newly painted/coated batch ready to replace to original batch? |

I received my replacement SD card today. I haven't been able to test if it works yet because my battery is dead and I left my cable at home/
I've decided to take the plunge and exchange mine, even though the peeling seems to be confined to the left side page buttons. It hasn't reached the "grandma's thighs" stage, but if I convince myself it doesn't matter and it starts peeling more in six months, I will be sad. Has anyone heard if we can exchange colors, or do we have to keep the same color? I have read that people requested a color change, but haven't seen any confirmation. Has anyone received their exchanged unit yet? |

Good, good. Now we are getting somewhere. I love the Metallic Purple also and I KNOW the problem is totally solved on what we have now in stock. You have my word that the colors are now safe to order. Every day I walk by them and rub about 10 of them hard to make sure. I take no chances now. Fellow employees think I have lost my mind... but I am from Missouri and "you gotta show me"!
Thanks Robertb for really making sure the problem is solved. I'd like to credit Amy as well for replying with both the email and shipping label as quickly as she did. Good work Astak! |

My e-mail indicated to return the SD card, but that's ok if I don't get it back since I use the SanDisk Ultra II SD cards. I did a speed test before sending the Pocket Pro back and the included SD Card had a sequential read speed of 10.6 MB/s, the Pocket Pro itself was 10.1 MB/s and the 2 GB SanDisk Ultra II was 18.6 MB/s. It was a lot pricier than the standard SD card and it's overkill for an Ebook reader, but I can also use it in my camera too.

Sorry for the OMG, but OMG I fricking LOVE it!!! (Yep I'm 34 and saying that!) Cute cute cute as a button, so much better looking than any photos I found on here or online, she's a hottie
![]() Dad just dropped it off, the happy purple one, and it's merrily charging away. Dying to use it, but going to be patient, definitely not my forte! Praying it doesn't start blistering/peeling, but if it does I'll just send it back for an exchange. Anyway, if you're a new person reading this post and reading up on this reader, and you maybe thought the Sony ones were cute....Nope, this one is so much better looking, especially now that I've seen all the Sony ones in-store, and now having the pocket pro in-hand. Will post a review by this weekend, see how she goes. Thanks again to all the reviewers out there whose reviews convinced me to take the plunge sight-unseen! Just told my dad, who had initially bought me the Sony PRS-700 back in July (that I returned), that I got this one for $226CAD vs. the $549CAD he'd paid for the Sony, thought he was going to keel over. ![]() |

Hi RobertB,
I seem to find the state of affairs regarding the colored pocket pros a bit confusing, so I think everyone would welcome some more information on how things are going to progress related to them: 1. You claimed that the colored units will be colored plastic, but so far reports indicate that only the Slate Blue is made from colored plastic under the rubberized coating, the rest (the maroon definitely) is gray/white under the colored paint. Is this going to be so in the future, too? Is the maroon (and possibly the rest) going to remain gray underneath (and therefore if paint begins to peel or the unit accidentally gets scratched, it becomes way uglier than it was matching colored plastic underneath as with the Slate Blue) or will you finally sell units made of maroon red plastic underneath the maroon coating? I really don't want this to sound as an accusation, but it would definitely matter for my and probably lots of other people's decision making and I think we deserve a straight answer to this question (and I believe a similar answer to clarify the state of affairs on the two other colors is warranted, too). 2. It is nice to have a reduced sale price campaign for the colored 5" units, but it is kind of hard to buy them if they are out of stock on the webshop. Will you get further stock before the end of September? If yes, in what state and of what manufacturing kind (see question one) will that stock be? If not, are you going to prolong the reduced sale price for the colored units due to the manufacturing problems and due to it being not orderable, or will it at least be possible to pre-order before September 30 with the reduced price (in which case it is even more important to get an answer to question 1)? 3. If the coating problems prolong or manifest later in the future even with the batch with proper paint setting you now claim to have, is Astak going to replace those as well, or does the free-shipping and replacement offer for the paint-related problems going to cease at some point? Make no mistake, I don't accuse Astak or you for these things nor do I try to force Astak do anything, I would just like to get information to make decisions upon. To be honest, I like the Maroon color but if in the future it starts to manifest problems and become gray in patches or all over, that would be ugly. With the Slate Blue it would at least be blue underneath which would possibly make it acceptable even if such units are not going to be replaced anymore at that time. Combine that with my being in the UK and not in the US, you can understand it is a slightly tougher decision to make than if I were in the US. Thanks in advance and best regards, Robert Varga Last edited by robvarga; 09-24-2009 at 03:12 AM. |

1. I am very grateful for the information regarding (a) "color(s)" (b) SD Cards & (c) charging the eReader(s) posted on Astak resources on these "threads". I just wish I'd had insights earlier ... but nothing could have achieved that ... for me since it seems "everyone was learning at about the same time".
2. Yesterday I was able to communicate with Customer Service by phone and received "return materials" yesterday afternoon and got the unit into the UPS system too. Since the materials received included having a "tracking number" both Astak & I can keep up to date on the movement .... 3. I learned that if I had paid for shipping without the benefit of Astak discounted contract rates ... I would have spent $18 for original shipment of the product ... I certainly want Astak to flourish ... and would have preferred Astak charging me a "legitimate original shipping charge" and then adding in "Handling fees" as an identifiable "add-on" as part of their identifiable "mark-up" ... I know "they" need to cover costs too ... just as I do. 4. Having read the notes regarding "color issues" I concluded that I would replace the unit I received ... so I now look forward to receiving one that "holds" its color and has a "charging light" that works properly. (a) It would be helpful, to me, to have notes in the "Users Guide" that are 'more complete' and includes information about all aspects of the "charging" process and all of the symbols which appear on the screen of the eReader ... so I know what to expect and how to effectively use the resource in advance of trying to use it for the first time. 5. Astak is my first eReader so I'm new to eReader use ... and this is all new territory for me ... I know my learning curve is fairly steep (heck I'm an old guy trying to find my way in this 'new world of advanced technological resources') ... but I want to be able to "keep on the trail without giving up or falling in a ditch" and I need good solid information and insights as early-on as possible .... 6. Clearly, had I not had the benefit of the Astak notes from Robert B and the observations of Astak users ... I would have sent the unit I had back for a full refund and moved on to another product ... given all I've learned "here" I have asked for another "Blue" unit and I anxiously await its arrival .... (a) I was cautioned to "off load" any books or materials I had loaded on the Astak and since mine had "never" worked ... I had nothing to download ... so sending the SD back was not an issue for me, now I understand why the same suggestion was offered three (3) times ... (b) I assume I'll receive a new SD with the new eReader I am sent from Astak. Peace & aloha from a very satisfied Astak consumer. 808Tom |

I also am going to return mine for another blue device. I really do love the colour and the rubbery feel of the unit. I shot off an email to Astak Support earlier this morning, as well as a PM to Robert as a heads-up. No reply yet, but it's only been a few hours.
Any kind of paint job that I could have personally done would most likely have failed miserably, and I would not only have ruined it, I would have voided any kind of warranty on the device. Also, the kind of reactions that I'm expecting will not warrant to have a device that looks my grandmother's half-peeled sunburned back. ![]() |
