Howards Hughes was starting to relax a bit. He was finally over the ocean, where, as far as he knew, there were no mountain ranges for the autopilot to fly into. He was originally sure that there wre none in Texas after they got half way through the state, but the M.A.R.V.I.N had nearly introduced him to the Hill Country at very terminal velocity. He was beginning to wonder about this invention and its utility in a commercial application.

"How far are we out of Havana?" he asked.

"How should I know? I'm just a collection of tubes and wires. Don't ask me about distances."

"But you're designed to give those sorts of answers! I developed that part myself!"

"Well, maybe that explains why I'm so depressed all the time."

Hughes sat silently as he watched the endles, and above all flatly boring ocean slide by underneath him. He thought of a variety of different plane designs as he mused. Visions of an emmense wooden float plane flashed before him. One without an autopilot, obviously. And one with twin propellors that woudl fly faster than anything ever built. Fast and far away from his creation that was trying to kill him.

That was paranoid thinking. He knew it. Besides, the plane was merely trying to commit suicide. His death would have been a side effect. He turned on the radio. All he could get was a station that played ska incessantly.

"Any chance I could take a nap without having to wake up dead?"

"Don't talk to me about life..."

"Didn't think so..."

The water went on forever.

I just finished a Douglas Adams binge, including The Lost Chapters to the Guide. It's given me a whole new err, respect, of Marvin that I never had before. If M.A.R.V.I.N. is following in the same ciruits Hughes should be afraid, very afraid.....

DON'T PANIC!

It's just fan-fiction really, and yes, available as e-book. It's an alternate ending to So Long. It's suitably random though, and I found it quite amusing.

In a small cantina in the nastier area of Havana, a cloaked figure sidled up to the back room door. After a series of complex knocks, a window slid open.

"Si?"

"It's me," said the cloak.

"What time of day is it?" said the door.

"I don't have the farking time! Do I look like somevun who vears a vatch?"

"Vears a vatch?"

"Ja!"

"Look, I'm not supposed to let anyone in who doesn't know the passwords!"

"Ignorant New Vorlders! Fery vell, sie month is too long to take a boat."

"Vhat, I mean, what if we send a telegram?"

"It's a holiday in Lodz. NOW LET ME IN, YOU INSUFFERABLE LITTLE MAN!"

"All right already! Sheesh! I'm just doing my job!"

As the door slammed shut, the patrons of the cantina turned back to their drinks, each one willing to swear that they had seen nothing unusual that night.

The steamer pulled into the docks and eased into its slip. The stevedores swarmed up the ramps and started unloading cargo. At midships, a beautiful woman with a smalle grey dog on a leash were having an argument.

"I don't know why I have to wear this thing! It's humilating!"

"I don't know if there's a leash law here in Havana, Vivaldi."

"Hmmph! That's speciesist, I tell you! First I have to take two baths in the space of three days and now I'm being treated like a second class citizen!"

"Well, technically, you aren't a citizen..."

"See what I mean? Say, who is that Asian looking guy? I didn't see him anywhere on the boat during the trip."

"Ship."

"No need to swear."

the real question is, what's a stevedore ?
