- edit Surviving an American Gulag by Edward C. Patterson - $0.99 [Memoir]

Quote:
Welcome to Ft. Gordon, Ga - the Special Training Unit. It's 1967, the height of the Vietnam War and Private Winslow Gibbs has been drafted. He's two-hundred and seventy pounds and a bundle of nerves. He also has issues of a different nature, but in these days before the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, these are dealt with in the American Gulag, the Army's answer to the problem. What they don't count on are the ones like Private Gibbs, who want to survive it and serve.

Based on the author's own experiences, Surviving an American Gulag is a story that the military would prefer remain a footnote. However, it is a defining moment and should not be lost to posterity. Also included with this work is "A Dime a Dip," a tale of the author's grandmother and her considerable efforts on behalf of thousands of migrant worker children.

I spent 4 years at Fort Gordon, GA. I think I'll pass on the memoir though.

What the hell were you doing with your bare flesh up against a telephone pole? Those things are usually covered in tar .... gets damn hot in the Summer. Are you completely barking mad??

I was a US Army Telephone Installer and Lineman (yes they call girls linemen). my left leg fell asleep after I had been up a pole for quite awhile and I fell. allllllll the way down. it ripped the left leg of my pants off and made hamburger from knee to crotch. I still have woodbits in my leg.

Oooooooo ..... that bites!! I managed to slip down a 60 foot rope (holding on just barely with my hands), got rope burn so deep into my palms ... and broke my feet when I landed.

Those are the sorts of accidents where you find yourself just cursing the universe. But, still to have pieces of wood lodged in you. That adds insult to injury.

Thank you. I wish more people would tell me when the price rises on titles. Would save me the work of having to open every single link once a week.

krisk,
Sorry about your leg, but it's kind of cool to meet someone else that was at Fort Gordon. I was in the Signal Corp. when I was stationed there from '84 to '88 and several of my friends worked with the post's phone system -- primarily the switching system which they were converting from analog to digital. Where you in the Army or where you a civilian? When were you there?

yeah I was Signal Corps, I was in AIT. I know they moved a lot of the school not sure when, did you ever hear about the "Pole Orchard"? that's where we learned how to climb. our school work was done in some of the old wooden barracks. they were always so damn hot that they had those huge stand up fans in the back. the rhythm would become hypnotic and I would end up standing through most classes at Parade Rest to avoid falling asleep. we ran EVERYWHERE even more than the troops training for Airborne as our legs had to be built up for pole climbing. later when I took the Airborne PT test I wasn't even breathing hard ! I was there in the spring and early summer of '77
