I assumed he meant the warm light in his comment. Because the ordinary light has been out for more than 6 years.

I can never remember what the official names on different devices are.

I find light text on a dark background not easy to read whether it's LCD, e-ink or paper.

I have the second generation H2O with the ComfortLight Pro. I find it works best when I am reading during the transition - then I simply don't notice it cutting in. But when I go to bed late and turn on what is already an orange* screen it can be a bit disconcerting. Overall I have been surprised how little I mind the orange once I give my eyes a chance to adapt ... and maybe it helps with getting to sleep or maybe it doesn't, can't say I've really noticed either way. I have enough trouble sleeping that I leave the warm light setting on and hope at least the placebo effect will help me out.

* My Kobo doesn't just go "warm", in the dark it goes quite a deep orange. You can change your bed time but I'm not that consistent and my chosen setting is far too optimistic.

I felt the same way about ereaders in general

Much like when I first started reading on my first Nook, you don't realize how nice the feature is until you have it and start using it.

I wish I had your problem. On my Clara, the shift is very subtle. It is okay. But for warm lighting my experience is the same as Pajamaman's. The Nook Glowlight 3 has way better warm lighting.

If I'm reading in a dark room at bedtime I adjust the light manually. When I first turn the reader on I'll set it to whatever light color looks OK (usually somewhere toward the middle) then as my eyes get used to the dark I can set the color more toward the orange end of the scale.

Of course if someone doesn't like the orange light they don't have to use it - they can keep it on the white end of the scale.

When I do finally get a new Reader that has a warm light, I will try it. How well does the warm light works in night mode?

I never use night mode, so I couldn't say.

My wife as my old Aura One now (it was the reader that finally got her hooked on using an e-reader). She generally keeps the comfortlight off, but from my vague memory it also had a very orange warm light, but probably not quite so dark as my H2Ov2.

I was a devoted paper reader. Until someone gave me a Paperwhite for my birthday. I'm a complete convert.

Same, except that I bought my first ereader myself because I simply had no more room for physical books in my small apartment. My income was small too back then and when Amazon released a cheap basic Kindle in 2011 I seized the opportunity and never looked back.

I worked at Barnes and Noble when the first Nook came out, but I didn't really pay much attention to it. Without really looking at an e-ink reader I dismissed ebooks with all the usual bullshit excuses you still hear: I just can't read on a screen, I'd miss the smell of books, yatta, yatta, yatta...

The commercials for the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight made me want to go and look at one (I'd stopped working at B&N at that point). I bought it, figuring I'd play with it a bit, but mostly I'd wasted money on a gadget.

Once I started reading on it, I haven't read a paper book.

When the first readers with embedded lights came out, I thought I'd ever use it

But in case of the One, I bought that one because it had the comfort light pro (ok, its size was also a very big selling point...)

I mostly read in a dark bedroom. I have the comfort light pro at around 80% and the "normal" light at 3%. My screen thus is very orange (especially if I compare it with my husband's kindle). But I don't notice it anymore, unless I really do that comparison. When I read on my tablet, I also never use a white background, but rather a more sepia one. I've always find that more comfortable to read.

I just got a new one, though I have a phone, a tablet, and a computer. I considered whether I wanted to replace my dying ebook reader and decided I did. Reasons I made that choice include small (usually, though large ones seem a growing niche), light, reasonably robust, easy on the eyes, good battery life, distraction free, optimized for reading and cheap enough that if I lose or break it, replacing it would not be a financial hardship (this is a personal reason; for some people replacing any reader would be a hardship).

I even consider my Nova good enough for some apps (chess, twitter, occasional browsing <> pocket saved long read articles) that in the end i uninstalled because they were distracting.
Maybe i should have two readers, or an eink monitor
