I bought one of these today:
https://www.amazon.com/Roku-Streamin...dp/B075XLWML4/

$30 off regular price. I didn't need it but it was a good deal.

Those Amazon tablets are nice. I bought the 8" HD last year during black friday, and the 10" HD the year before that.

I bought slippers at Kohls (to keep my feet warm while I read, so it counts for the forum, right?)

Also some usb flashdrives at Best Buy.

I have a few stocking stuffers to pick up, but I am mostly done.

Found that desktop model at HP's site:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06442766

The processor is 3200U, a 2-core, 4-thread mobile processor with a Passmark score of 4675 which should be plenty for your needs, similar to older AMD A10's. The i3 8100 is a true desktop processor with 4 cores ans a Passmark score of 8000 (close to my 2nd gen core i7). There's hardly any difference between the two GPU's. So unless you plan to add at least another 4GB to the Dell, I'd also lean toward the HP. The HP appears to have HDMI but not DVI, so make sure you have or get a monitor with HDMI (watch out for heavily discounted DVI-only models).

One thing though - you mentioned Word but not Excel. If you do much with Excel the faster i3 in the Dell would become a much bigger factor IMO as Excel is very good at maxing out all 4 cores on CPU-intensive operations like big VLOOKUPs...

Amazon Cyber Monday -- 30 Nov ~ 02 Dec

Bottom line: not everything on sale for Back Friday will be on sale for Cyber Monday. Most of the items will be priced the same, but some will be priced higher and some will be priced lower.

See Amazon's Black Friday post for prices. Cyber Monday prices are in red.

Quote:

I'd take a look at this desktop:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...080_em_1p_6_lm

It's an HP 6-core i5 for $339. No SSD but the Optane memory is supposed to provide some of the same benefit.

Edit> The i5-8400 in this system has a passmark score of 11500, far surpassing the other 2 systems.

Is it possible to remove the Optane card, replace it with a real SSD, install the OS there, and use the spinning disk as a data drive?

Possible? Certainly. But there goes your cost savings, and you'd best be up to doing all of that yourself. Personally, I'd stick with a machine that already has an SSD.

Agreed - I added an SSD to my desktop and the Win10 reload was a bit of a pain. Some SSD's come with a 1-time-use migration utility but probably not a small, cheap one.

But I don't think you're giving up that much with the Optane - mostly a bit longer boot time but Win10 has cut that down to the point where it's no longer that big of a deal.

Depends on how big of an SSD you need. I find it's usually cheaper installing my own SSD than having it pre-built. Of course, I tend to want 512GB - 4TB and those upgrades usually cost an arm and a leg through manufacturer.

Iirc, saw the Intel QLC 1TB M.2 NVMe for $85 in a BF ad.

I use Macrium Reflect free for cloning drives.

Yes, as I might well. But consider the audience. Not all are comfortable opening up their computers, much less imaging an OS drive. But really, I think we've beat this horse to death.

That's like getting two candy bars from a vending machine when you only paid for one. If I were you, I'd keep my eyes glued to the sky for the next couple of days in case Amazon unleashes its fleet of black drones on you trying to collect that extra credit
