mesuthaznedar-
Please attach your my-upgrade.out and my-upgrade.err results. You probably need to edit your update script because the DXG is not exactly the same as the K3G. That takes some extra knowledge of the DXG because there are some K3G specific files you should not allow to install on the DXG. Those kindle mysteries was one reason I stopped trying with my DXG even being able with linux. I learned not to upgrade the 3G WAN parts of the DXG for example. There is a video file also and the fb.modes that should not be upgraded. I am sure Newman can be more specific. I think I would not even try without detailed kindle and linux knowledge unless you can find somebody to do that for you. |

If they are going to be separated, might as well do it properly with the whole thread....

Which is expected, this is an update package for a small screen device being applied to a large screen device. Disable the attempt to update /etc/fb.modes and the update should continue or maybe even complete. |

You need to edit the update script in the .sh file you have customized and included in your .bin package. This is a linux shell script. What I did was just comment out the parts I did not want the script to update. The comment character is the # symbol at the beginning of the line.
You need to be able to read the shell script to know what Amazon is doing and to modify that to do what you want to do instead. Please find somebody who can understand a bash script and edit the correct parts. There will be a lot more than just the fb.modes to adjust to do the mod properly. Please follow the instructions in the first post of this thread carefully. The Amazon program first applies the patch to the existing file in the DXG and then takes the result and calculates the md5sum to compare with the expected checksum. If the files are not identical there is an error. Be sure you can undo any changes in case you do not like the result from the update. That would require you backup your mmcblk0p1 as discussed in my previous posts. Having the 3.4.2 version of the TLS is nice in theory but is of limited usefulness unless there is no other way to access the internet because the browser is still very slow and tedious even when working and can easily crash on complicated web sites because of the limited RAM of the DXG. There is a real possibility of fouling your DXG if you don't know enough linux to get out of trouble. Good luck. |

Hello again, I needed 3.4.2 for wikipedia, it isn't so practical to view complex websites with Kindle DX, but if the web browser bocomes unstable with 3.4.2 hack maybe I should stay with my 3.3 firmware and don't go any further
![]() At least I've got PDF tools (highlighting, darkening) with 3.x upgrades. Thank you all for your comments and help. |

The fault lies with the vnc server. Experience (in the DX(G)/VNC thread) shows that it is a server/Windows problem and that some servers work better than others. Try a different VNC server application. |

I have tightvnc http://www.tightvnc.com/ (the latest one) and putty (the latest one).
Do You suggest there are better servers? Like what? I am not sure whether this is a vnc server issue, maybe this is the way kindle works, or hardware driver of the eink display works... Generally, apart from vnc- I was wondering if those updates make kindle dxg eink refresh rate smaller (faster response time). Last edited by kamerek; 01-27-2016 at 02:12 PM. |
