OTOH, dear seajewel this "cover and case thread" might acually be the precisely right venue for proponents of covers and cases, don't you think?

I accidentally dropped my old 500 in the Sony case on ceramic tile. It broke the housing of the ereader but was still functional. Sony gave me the full $100 trade-in value to put towards my 505 (special promotion at the time).

I have dropped my T1 in the Sony case on carpet (accidentally feel asleep on the couch while I was reading). OK, I might have done this 2 or 3 times... It was fine.

Really it's case-by-case. How far did you drop it? Where was the point of impact? How hard or soft was the floor?

Cover and case vs. sleeve

Cases and covers are pretty much what it's about in this thread.

A sleeve is something like a padded bag or envelope, fitted(or somtimes not) for the device. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the the padded plastic "sleeve" the T1 was shipped in just about the best sleeve possible?

It's got the dimensions. Glue leather on it! I was thinking about gluing leather(very thin, high qual) on the glossy bezel. I refrained and got a case/cover(what's the dif anyway?).

I started this thread to tie all the various case/cover threads for the T1 together. It is the best way to have a "one stop shop" for those seeking a good protective cover for their new ereader.

What I did not expect though was the growth of a pissing competition between those who prefer a pouch style cover or a case (corner straps or whatever).

Buying a case for your T1 is very much an individual style choice. What works for you should not be rammed down the throat of another who prefers and differing option.

Please watch what you type and respect other posters point of view. Politeness costs nothing.

I am just glad we are seeing more choices now. For several months after the T1 came out, it was a different story.

Happens all the time, if you ask me. I've even fallen asleep a couple of times with the unprotected unit! That gave me a shiver when I woke up, since I'd obviously been rolling over it for a few hours. Thanks to our hard mattress predilection, my back and my T1 are OK!

Now it's got a case and it's lying around somewhere about(next to, under...etc.) the bed in the mornig and I'm not worried. But. Warning! This T1 is thin, the reading surface seems to be scratch resistent glass, but a misplaced elbow, at night, dreaming, might be enough to crack it!

Is anyone using a Timbuk2 sleeve (or "envelope," as the company calls them)? Does it provide adequate protection? I initially thought I was going to get a Kindle Keyboard but at the last minute I changed my mind and purchased up a Sony. I had bought a Timbuk2 sleeve ahead of getting a device because I didn't want my reader to arrive before I had anything to protect it. It arrived a day or so ago, and I'm still waiting on my reader.

But although I love the materials and the color, I'm not sure it's padded enough to protect the reader and now I'm considering a case instead. I guess I will know when the device arrives whether I'm satisfied. I'm also concerned that I may want a tighter fit for the device than the sleeve I have can provide. I like this color best of all the choices and none of the other sleeve colors really excite me, but I'm more concerned about protection over style.

I don't use leather products, so some of the choices at Timbuk2 and elsewhere are out for me. This thread has been very helpful, BTW.

It's your prerogative, your thread, your decision. Call it the "PRS-T1 cover, case and marsupium thread" if you will. Or don't.

Don't, I mean, call it the "marsupium" thread, instead use the word "pouch"

Before I received my reader, I decided on this Timbuk2 sleeve: Kindle Touch Plush Sleeve. I first saw it at Best Buy and liked how the padding is quite firm but the interior is very soft. I thought I might try it with just an inexpensive silicon skin on the e-reader, if I wanted it to be more "grippy."

However, when I got my reader (Christmas) my husband and daughter gave me the "plain" Sony cover for it. I hadn't planned on using a cover at all, but I didn't want to hurt their feelings, so I tried it out. As it turns out, I really like it - it's low-profile and doesn't add much weight - but I feel like it's not enough protection for when my reader is traveling in my bag or laptop case (or existing anywhere in the vicinity of my three-year-old son).

Back at Best Buy, I managed to remove a Sony cover from the box and try it inside this sleeve (without getting accused of shoplifting, lol). The Kindle Touch sleeve was just a millimeter or two shy of being wide enough for the Sony+Sony cover to be a comfortable fit. Unfortunately, they didn't have that item stock for any other models. So I checked the specs online and saw that the version for the Kindle Fire has very similar dimensions but is just a touch wider (9 in. as opposed to 8.4 in.; both are 5.9 in. tall.). Here's a link: Kindle Fire Plush Sleeve I just received it a couple of hours ago, and it is perfect! I'll take pics tonight if I have time.

The sleeve you picked out is .1 in. more narrow and .2 in shorter than the Kindle Touch sleeve I referenced, but I feel sure it will fit because the PRS-T1 is smaller in both dimensions than the Kindle Keyboard that the sleeve was made to fit. I haven't seen one in person to have an idea of how well padded it is, but it's listed as the same weight (.2 lbs) as these two, so I would guess that it was similar.

My husband paid full price for the Sony cover (about $35) and the pouch I bought was $30 (seriously overpriced IMO but I had a gift cert). The actual reader only cost me $14 more than we have spent on items to contain the reader! (I bought it during the B&H Photo sale.)

Without taking cost into consideration, I'd say I have the perfect solution for my own uses and preferences; I'm very happy with what I have. But if I do take cost into consideration, I'd say I was CRAZY to get both the case and the pouch, and I'd be better off stashing a few dollars a month as a "reader replacement fund" and forgoing both the case and the cover - maybe opting for the silicon skin, which is quite inexpensive.

Even so (putting things into perspective), the price for all three items together was the same as the price for the Sony reader alone, just a few months ago when I first started shopping for an e-reader.

I wanted to point out a few other sleeves that caught my eye. I just saw this one on Amazon for the first time. No reviews yet, but the design is very clever - it looks just like run-of-the-mill manila envelope, but it comes in genuine leather and synthetic leather versions and is less than $20. I also saw a version in black synthetic leather.

I liked this one in their "Quorky" style as well (I think they use the same Kindle Keyboard product photo on all of their items in this style):

Finally, I saw this neoprene sleeve at my local Tuesday Morning store for about $15, in the Vine and Scatter Dot patterns:

I think it's a clever and cute idea too, except that I'm not sure how protected the reader's screen would be. I mean, the screen needs something stiff or enough padding over it to be protected, be it a sleeve or a case, doesn't it?

I agree, depending on what kind of abuse you feel your reader will be subjected to. It seems like it would offer much more scratch protection than "smash" protection. If I had a more structured laptop bag, I would probably not hesitate to use this sleeve. But the one I have is sort of floppy and unstructured (outside of the actual computer section) and you never know what I might have tossed in there to take to/from work!

That the style and type of case you choose is a personal one. One point of view preferring one over the other should NOT be rammed down the throat of those that prefer something different.

Be polite in discussing the alleged benefits of one style over the other.

People choose a style & type of case/sleeve for a variety of reasons. Mine is not any more right or wrong than yours is. Mine is right for me for MY reasons and yours is right for you for YOUR reasons.

You know...stuff like that.
