Yes this happens with all books and all kinds of chanches I make in the tags.

OH, OH, Sorry I tested with the 0.8 switch=False.
With the switch=True it's all OK.

Just for fun ...

For fun, I added a third edit metadata (single) dialog, this one showing all information on one tab. It is convenient as long as one has a rather large screen (works fine for me in 1280x1024). This dialog is in trunk now, and will be in the next release.

@Charles - now that is how I like the dialog laid out. Im not at my pc to try it yet but is it possible somehow to hook that into the E shortcut to appear instead of the other one? Or does it have it's own menu and shortcut. I would rather only use this one via the normal key shortcut or toolbar button click if possible...

"Preferences -> behavior -> Edit metadata (single) layout" sets the dialog that opens with shortcuts or programmatic access. There are three of them: the default, one that puts standard and custom metadata on one tab and formats & cover on another, and this 'all on 1' version.

Awesomeness thanks!

I wonder if Kovid would consider adding Select All / Select None buttons to the metadata configuration dialog for the global set of checkboxes? There are times where I want to just get a rating for a book and leave all my other data untouched, and then switch back to getting everything.

Also I have been caught out a few times with this if I forget to tick the options back on and do download metadata on a new book and wonder why it hasn't populated other fields I was expecting. I don't have a super answer to this, other than to somehow show on that initial metadata download question dialog a comma separated list of the metadata fields that are set to be populated? It would act as a reminder to jump into configuration to fix them.

When downloading covers for multiple books Calibre failed to download the cover for a number of them. The message text read:

Could not download metadata and/or covers for 0 of the books. Click "Show Details" to see which books.
In reality, it was 151 books that were listed under "Show Details", not 0.

Did I already say I love you? I love that single metadata edit dialog! I already liked the sleeker looking second one, but when I edit my metadata, the main data only gets added once (when I import the book). The custom metadata is what is edited more often and that being on the other tab always felt too much work...

That would be inconsistent with the minor version number, which is in decimal. I'd have to grind my teeth each time I'd see a mixed-base version number

It's not inconsistent. It's a code with deep hidden meaning.
I hear Dan Brown is writing a new book about it.

If you have the title and author boxes checked to be overwritten, and do a fetch of metadata on the edit metadata dialog, then it does not update the title sort or author sort if it gets new values for those fields. Create an empty book with just an identifier value set and do an update to test this.

However if I do a background download of the metadata (ctrl+d) the author and title sort do get updated.
