Quite right you are there Monsmags.
Plenty of sushi out there that has absolutely no meat in it or plenty of cooked meat variants. Paul. |

Could the name "tempura" have been used? Tempura should be made with a very light batter resulting (it's quite distinct from most any other batter I've had). But of course that doesn't mean that, like some restaurants sometimes do with any dish, it isn't sometimes cooked and prepared poorly

"OK, I Ate Some; But Never Again"
But sometimes we do. I say that I like Chinese food, and I do. The western/American kind that is. My one experience with true Chinese food (remember the chicken feet reference?) has me thinking back to "our" (current western culture) food habits. Hundreds, and thousands, of years ago a small farm or village couldn't afford to slaughter a cow just for a steak. Without refrigeration other means of preservation had to be devised - "prosciutto crudo" (dried uncooked ham & prosciutto cotto), Nordic Lutefisk (dried and salted cod), etc. And ALL of the animal was used. We of modern western culture just want the steak and to heck with the rest. But we do eat the "leftovers" and just don't know it. Everybody has heard the suggestion "Don't ask what's in the sausage, just eat it". And does anyone think that chicken soup is made with just the white meat? The next time you see a food product listing "Made with 100% pure beef/chicken" don't ask/don't tell. ![]() Last edited by SameOldStory; 02-12-2011 at 08:20 AM. |

@ montsnmags: tempura? the name is a bit familiar to me. but I'm not sure. I love fried things, sure, but don't like those things that are so oily.
one more thing: I once ate mustard when I was small. and I'm pretty sure that I'll never ever touch any kind of mustard again. Last edited by maianhvk; 02-12-2011 at 09:59 AM. |

No Harry, you're talking about sashimi (raw fish, or sometimes raw meat), sushi is sweet rice rolls, usually wrapped in seaweed (nori) and with three thinly sliced ingredients wrapped up in the center, one of which might or might not be sashimi.

Sashimi and sushi(the kind with raw fish in it).
I don't know. It's not like I suffer some kind of fish related trauma as a kid. I simply can't stand the thought of having raw fish in my mouth. I actually had a serving of sushi(with raw fish) once, and to be fair and honest, the fish pretty much melted in my mouth and it was fresh(no fishy smell). Still, no more. |

In this country alone there must be 40 or 50 different versions of "southern fried chicken" that are commonly server in restaurants. |

I liked the snake! They wouldn't tell me what it was. Sort of looked like fish but didn't taste like it. I suppose it takes on the flavors that they cook with.

I did greatly enjoy living in South Africa, particularly working in the game parks, because you were constantly being exposed to all manner of different foods, of which many were very nice tasting, anything from crocadile to elephant was consistently offered on the menu along with an amazing array of other things.

Grace Young in one of her Wok cookbooks has recipes she has gotten from various Chinese/whatever restaurants throughout the U.S. You can have Indian/Chinese, Jamaican/Chinese, Mexican/Chinese. Everybody puts their own twists on food.
