Next year, Jon, you can start the social group and make all the rules you want. This year someone else gets to make the rules. No one is twisting your arm to continue.

Oh, and by the way. I've got at least 1/2 dozen books started last year that are anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 done and I *am* going to count them as finished in 2011.

Jon--the way it is done on some BBS is to ask for creation of a sub-forum and then each person creates his or her own thread that is used like a journal. This is common on exercise BBS sites so that people can keep a workout history and other people can comment as desired. In this scheme, I would create something like "taming's 20111 reads" .

It would take some discussion amongst the mods. We can do it this way just fine, of course.

I would vote in favor of something like this, if the mods are amenable to it. We've already encountered the limitation of using just one thread in the group forum. Plus I think this would encourage more discussion about the books we're reading and such. Since it's still early, the transition would be easy and we might get more people to join in.

So, +1 from me if the mods are willing to accommodate us.

Edited to correct horrible misuse of the letter "o"

If we each have our own thread, perhaps they can be placed in posters' alphabetical order, so that it would be easier to find the posts of the people you are interested in.

PS - No, now I can see that it wouldn't matter, because each time a post is made to a thread, that thread would rise to the top, out of alphabetical order.

With Terminator's permission, maybe we should each start our own threads, without requiring the moderators to do anything. I don't see why that wouldn't work, provided that the forum can accommodate the number of posters we have.

So now it's a competition? Who the heck really cares? Sheesh, maybe we should all be tested on the books we list, just to make sure we're not lying to inflate our totals.

An easier way to discuss would be nice. As it is, I feel like I'll just be repeatedly going to my own spot and barely skimming what others have posted.

I'd also like to be able to see the tickers.

I don't know how it would work as a MR feature, but in places that do create this kind of thing, people do a whole lot of community building and exploring other people's threads, commenting, etc. It would not happen if people were just posting the name and their continuing count, but if people were doing mini-reviews (or longer) it definitely could happen.

I don't see this as competitive in any way--nor do I think we all have to use the same method for it to be personally meaningful and fun. I'm all for fun and reading combined.

I agree. Although we can edit our own posts, there is a limit as far as characters allowed.B ut I would much rather be able to discuss what everyone is reading withing that thread.

Plus, I get what you're saying about the rules. I'm on the fence myself as I still have the same 50 pages (or so) to read that I had 3 days ago and may not finish for another day or two (I've been spending all of my free time here. Anyway, I'm still not sure if I will count my current book towards 2011 or not.

I like the idea of our all having our own threads in the group. It lends itself to better management, and as I stated earlier, discussing the books is a big part of the fun.

Has anyone flagged taming's suggestion post for the mods to see? I would do it but if someone else already has... well, I don't think hammering them with it would be polite.

I'm looking forward to trying this. It really shouldn't be a problem as I read close to ninety books last year and wasn't even really trying. That's the most I've read in quite a few years even though I've always been a reader; I had slacked off over the last few years to some degree. This should be fun.

I agree. This is only Jan. 2 and I have already ran into posts that I wanted to reply to and couldn't in the group form. An important part of belonging to a reading group is the ability to discuss what people are reading/have read. I hope we can work it out so this is possible.

Slightly - Have any of you ever purchased ebooks published by Penguin? I *think* I read a thread that spoke about non-working TOC, poor formatting and lack of cover art on all Penguin ebooks...

There's a Mercedes Lackey book I've been itching to get my dirty little paws on but it’s pretty expensive for bad work. If I have to, I'll buy the bound version.

Disclaimer: I have not seen this myself, but...

Most of the complaints I heard were regarding Penguin Classics, not regular releases. That said, can you get a sample of the book? Most of the samples I've gotten for various books were the first part, including the TOC.

What's the title? I can use multiple formats with my arsenal of apps and I'd be happy to shop around for you and see what the samples look like.

Intrigues by Mercedes Lackey - I downloaded the "preview" from Kobo to my iPhone. I show a cover on my bookshelf but the "preview" was just a list of previously written books and other blank/random pages that are always found in pb books before getting to the table of contents.
