Did you see this? I don't think it will ever be any competition, but it's interesting!

Reminds me of a SF book I read quite a while back. Subatomic physics had advanced to the point that chance had been eliminated and everything was believed to be predetermined. The physicist whose work had led to this had also invented an automated "orchestra" that could play any composition on physical instruments (as opposed to using synthesizers). I can't remember the author or title of the book right now. I remember it had a Mithraic cult in it... rats. My mind is going.
Anyway, I'd rather hear a live musician perform any day. ![]() |

I think it will take a long time for robots to even come close to the skill of human musicians. Look at how clumsy even walking looks from a top-of-the-line robot these days...imagine what happens if you try to do all the fast, precise and multi-directional movements needed to play the violin...
I could imagine a robot playing the piano in the near future, but not the violin...at least not very well... ![]() |

Hi everybody!
I just wanted to let you all know that I passed my "probationary year" (or whatever that is called in english, it's "Probejahr" in german) and will be allowed to keep my job here in Erfurt. I have not received the final contract, so a little tension remains (it has to be printed and signed by all kinds of people so it can take a bit) but the decision was made. The whole orchestra hat to vote with yes or no, in the end there were 50 yes and 3 no votes which is cool (although I'd really like to know who voted no and why...^^) so I guess I'm off to a good start. |

Congratulations - well done! "Probationary year" is the correct English translation.
