Well, Android and Blackberry, certainly. WebOS seems more oriented to HTML/CSS/JavaScript.

HP has gone on record as saying their purchase of Palm shouldn't be correlated with an interest in getting into the smartphone wars;
If I were them, I wouldn't be either. It's a feast or famine business, and you're as good as your latest offering. Motorola was rumored to be looking to exit the smartphone business after a failure to follow up on the popular Razor device. The Droid turned around their fortunes, at least for the moment. Smartphones are fashion accessories and the market is fickle.

The bigger question is why they did buy Palm.

also, the Slate coming off the table (and WinMo7 coming of the Slate) at the same time as the Palm acquisition wasn't coincidence. Then again, HP was already in the smartphone business with the Glisten and iPaq, and is currently looking for a new boss so my money's on CES next year for any real news.
I concur. I assumed it would take time to digest Palm and come up with a product road map in any case. The departure of Mark Hurd just adds some delay.

Quite often, this is what they've been told to expect by over-zealous Linux users. However, it's a paradoxical hope. It is logically impossible for any thing to be better than any other thing whilst remaining completely identical to it. A perfect copy may be equal, but it can never surpass. So when you gave Linux a try in hopes that it would be better, you were inescapably hoping that it would be different. Too many people ignore this fact, and hold up every difference between the two OSes as a Linux failure."
Quite right.

Most folks get computers to perform tasks, like getting email or surfing the web. They learn just as much about the system as they have to to do what they want to do. Linux has a steep uphill climb competing with Linux on the desktop because it's different. It may be arguably better, but the majority of folks it gets pushed at won't be interested in coming up the learning curve to deal with it. What they learned and are used to is Windows, and as long as it does the job for them, they will have no real incentive to switch.

Quote:
I've always been a Mac person. Several years ago, my software engineer husband asked me to try Linux. I started out with Linspire, and enjoyed using it, but didn't like the way software would disappear with upgrades. He switched me to SUSE; later I used Debian (now Debian Lenny) on my desktop and Ubuntu on my laptop. I like them both, but truth be told, I have never been able to learn text commands. I can usually figure stuff out with the GUI, but sometimes I need Hubby to bail me out. I'm so spoiled having live-in tech support!
Ubuntu is Debian based. While it's useful to be able to use a command line, current flavors like Ubuntu largely can be dealt with via the GUI.

I started with PCs in the MS-DOS days with the dreaded "C:\>" prompt, when there were no GUIs, and started using Unix when the usual setup was that it ran on a multi-user server that you accessed via a character mode dumb terminal. Again, no GUI. You typed commands on the command line to run programs and do what you wanted to do, and the challenge was remembering them. It got more complicated because many command had parameters you were expected to pass them that told the command what you wanted it to do, like "ls -al", which listed the directory you were currently in long form (equivalent to "dir" in Windows) and showing all files (files whose names begin with a . are not displayed by default - you must pass ls "-a" to see them.)

Linux is designed to look and act like Unix, and behaves the same way. Some things are faster and easier to do from the command line, but for day to day usage you can normally avoid it.

The Mac gained a following because it tried hard to reduce what you needed to know to be able to use the system at all, and up until Mac OS/X, the Mac didn't have a command line. Everything was GUI based. You can get a command line on OS/X, but I suspect the vast majority of Mac users never go near it, and some may not be aware it exists.

What do we do? Surrender?

Never! Head for the exit. I'll set the self destruct and blow the little droolers right off the map! On the count of 3.

Don't apologize, pshrynk.
At least you took the time to answer my question.
I appreciate it.
Everyone else just ignores me then gets pissed off if I repeat the question.

Sorry to hear that your day sucks.
Hope it improves.
