You should try working with a dyslexic manager!

Looks like your IT just read the headline and not the email.

English for non-native speakers can cause some difficulties.
During my first year when I was teaching in a Japanese university, and talking with some senior co-eds, I asked one "What did you do on Sunday?" She replied; "I played with myself all morning." That set me back on my heels until I realized she meant that she 'played by herself' in the morning. Another time I asked my students to 'tell me one thing that you are good at doing.' A lovely young thing said; "I sleep around often." (I really thought I was going to like this job...) Unfortunately, what she meant was that she didn't need her own bed to be able to sleep. She could easily sleep in a hotel, friends house, etc. Ahhh.... language!

Add to this that in a lot of lingos the words for language and tongue + which is archaic and which modern may swap and you get the perfect oral ahhh verbal confusion

Went shopping this morning and lo and behold, the supermarket has put in the do it yourself checkouts. Great I thought, won't have to wait in the queue. Start off ok and then the soup that was on special came out as normal price - call assistant - doesn't know what to do - calls someone else - ditto, calls someone else! Ten minutes later it's finally sorted. It would have happened even if you'd gone through the checkout they told me, but it wouldn't have taken so long to fix I replied.

Never again until the staff know what they are doing. And there's a moral issue here, should I be doing it and maybe doing someone out of a job?

Then I had to wait in line for the ATM, making me late for my coffee date, what a morning!

Coming to the conclusion that the cold that didn't want to break through in the last couple of weeks is actually my hayfever. It probably didn't bother me before because of the wet weather but it's been great weather for the past couple of days.

I'm glad it isn't the persistent little cough I had last year, just a sore throat, irritated eyes and a sniffle (not even a real runny nose). Unfortunately the only over the counter medicine that works for me, loratadine, makes my hair fall out. Unless the symptoms get worse I just have to wait it out.

I have to call the blood bank to ask if I can donate now. I've already postponed three times (possible root canal infection, root canal treatment, a cold that was really hayfever).

My grocery store has an option were you zap items as you shop and then zap a bar code at check out. It takes about one minute to check out when it works right. It is great.

But how do you know if they're charging the right price? Does the zapper tell you how much it's charging as it zaps? And if it's wrong, is there an app for that? Or do you just put it back on the shelf and buy a different brand?

There is a screen on the zapper that tells you the price. You can remove items very easily. It works pretty well. It is really great just before a major storm, the Super Bowl, or other days when the store is crowded. Since you bag your goods as you go and all you have to do is zap a bar code to check out you can check out at the customer service desk. Waiting in line takes no time.

I always double check my bill before paying, it brings everything up on the screen and then you hit the pay button.

I keep hearing rumors about using RFID tags, then pushing your cart through a detector and it totes up all the items in the cart.

I haven't seen it implemented, and frankly don't think I'd like to. Too much chance of inadvertently (or intentionally) mispricing things.

One of the supermarkets I frequent has self-checkout, and it's usually empty. There are 8 machines and if three are in use, it's a lot. Japan doesn't have 'Express Lanes' in most stores so as I usually shop daily for our dinner and have fewer than 5-8 items, not having to stand in line behind someone who shops for the week is a blessing.

One of our local supermarkets is (shock) actually trying out the idea of a single queue, and when you reach the front, you are directed to the next free cashier!

About time I'd say!!

Some of our local supermarkets have been using the single queue idea for years.

Unfortunately, they've been matching it with a single cashier.

That's the norm for all banks and post offices here, as well as all public offices. Take a number! And there are rows of chairs for waiting. No standing around.
