It's a buy for me. The fact that this is the #2 book by that title, means that there is a #1 (there is no subtitle on the first one). Here it is: https://www.amazon.com/Alcohol-Expla...dp/B00W4D1YW4/. It receives 4.7 stars, from 510 ratings. That book is not free--it's $6.99. I've put #1 on my wishlist, despite the fact there is a very vocal 3% of the raters who give the book one star. Most of them have complaints that sound legitimate, if what they say is true. However, there are some people who would condemn even "motherhood and apple pie". And, besides, the complaints about book #1 should have little, if any, bearing on the value of #2, since #2 is a book about _tools_ to help alcoholics. I don't know if you can get sweet potatoes in the produce section of stores outside of the deep South, if not you should be able to get them in cans in stores outside of the fringes of said region. No, they're not authentic Pilgrim food (sweet potatoes came to the Americas via Africa), but we don't have to concern ourselves with that--remember: this will be _Christmas_ dinner, and not Thanksgiving dinner. ![]() |

Sweet potatoes are native to Central and South America. It is the yam which is native to Africa. (I went to Wikipedia to make sure! This is a tough crowd here, isn't it?) |

I was so "sure" of what I said being true that I didn't see any need to look it up! There are usually enough resident scholars on each thread that they'll set a poster straight when he's wrong, though. Yams and sweet potatoes are very similar. Interesting, though, I have never heard of a yam pie. Wish my grandmother were living, so I could ask her why not. For that matter, I have never heard of anyone in the deep South growing (farm kind of growing) yams! But the reason may be that there's more money in cotton and peanuts (and sweet potatoes) than growing yams. ![]() There is one very interesting fact about the South, related to our two posts, that I have pondered quite a bit over the years: Southerners, almost "to the man," were very poor until about the mid-20th century or so. Yet, many of the common foods of Southerners were _imported_ (read that as "_expensive_"). Tea--product of China; bananas (for banana pudding)--South America, maybe even Central America; coffee--somewhere in South and/or Central America and, as you pointed out--sweet potatoes (although I think that they began to be grown extensively in the South). I am forgetting some, but you get the picture. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-17-2019 at 06:15 PM. |

What I have been led to believe is there are (at least) two major varieties of sweet potatoes: the brownish skin kind commonly called "sweet potatoes" and the purplish-skinned one sold as "yams". I have read true yams are not commonly grown in the US and "yams" sold in the grocery store are the purple skin sweet potato - but the two kinds don't taste the same. |

Yes, I remember the candied yams, now. I don't remember them ever being served at our house or by my grandmothers, though. Seems like they served them in school, and at the "meat-and-three" (one meat, three vegetables of your choice. And a biscuit or different bread. Sometimes a free iced tea (always very sweet and very strong)), restaurants at lunch. I got the idea that the yams were straight out of the cans, sweet as you mentioned, more so because of some moderately-sweet syrup-like stuff covering them. All the cooks did was to warm 'em up, and dish them out. Oh, how could I forget! At these "meat-and three" restaurants, cornbread was offered as one of the breads. Always. Always. And it wasn't the Jiffy cornbread from a mix, stuff, either. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 12-17-2019 at 06:17 PM. |

We used to have a Boarding House here that was run by two old ladies. At lunch anyone could stop in and eat for $2.00. The food was great Southern Cooking you just sat down and the platters and bowls were passed around. They stayed in business until the mid '80s.
