no, it won't be a quick fix and he would be well advised to make really good friends with his physical therapist. my last Newfie was about 6 mos when I blew out my knee, she became velcro, she also, unfortunately, mellowed very quickly. in many ways I feel as though I stole her puppyhood from her

Yesterday my friends had to put down their dog, which I looked after when they went on holiday, because the (probably) cancerous tumour/swelling had spread from her leg to her stomach. Tonight we learned that my grandmother's half sister, with whom we always had good contact, has a brain tumour and has got about six months to live.

It's really hard when more than one awful thing happens at a time - very difficult to cope with. Commiserations.

Rant, part 3:

The man who was keeping my nephew's Doberman puppy until he can get his knee surgery scheduled fell down his own steps last night and broke his leg. Now HE is in the hospital awaiting surgery.

REALLY?????? Enough, already!

We're going into dog transport mode here shortly. And anybody planning a trip here might want to rethink it. We seem to be huddled under a little black cloud of bad luck here.

Now remember - Three limbs must make contact with secure surfaces at ALL times. Only move one limb at a time. This means if you are walking you must have both hands on the rail every time you take a step!

You poor thing!

I was about to strangle my father tonight.

He was talking to the friend who arranged the roofers to repair the roof over my bedroom. My father has told them that he agrees with the quote and that they can start right away. But two minutes later he told the friend that he's quite okay with it if the roofers wanted to repair our roof when they have not work to do and when it's quiet for them! I yelled that I was not okay with that but he didn't react to that.

Because strangling my father is somewhat counter productive I send off an email to that friend to ask which paint I can use best to cover up the brown leak stains and a ps that I don't agree with my father on the "they can do it when they have a quiet moment" remark.

Right! And we didn't have electricity when I was growing up. We had to watch TV by candlelight!

I do feel blessed that I have that security.

That, however, doesn't mean I don't get cranky when I can't sleep on rainy nights because I'm either waiting for it to start dripping or because I'm listening to the dripping.

Rant, parts 4, 5, etc...

I may as well just make this a comedy routine. B.'s insurance company called yesterday and told him that as a result of a fender bender he had the day before the soccer accident, they were totalling his car. (Okay, this may not be as bad as it sounds because he won't be driving for a while anyway.) Then yesterday evening I went over to sit with him so his wife could go to class (she had to give a presentation) -- and she came right back in the house with the news that her car wouldn't start. I sent her on with my car and called AAA, and had them put a new battery in. Then, about 10:00 p.m. all the electricity in the neighborhood went out. There I was fumbling around in the dark in a strange 3 story house trying to get candles lit -- not my best moment. And finally, when I got ready to go home, there was probably the thickest fog I've ever driven in.

And the truth is, we WERE actually laughing by the time the lights went out. Because really, it is getting a little ridiculous in that household. He did see the new surgeon yesterday, though, and liked him a lot. He's scheduled to have the surgery next Tuesday, which is about 2 weeks after the accident. 3 of the 4 major ligaments have extensive damage, but apparently a high percentage of people with this type of dislocation have severe vascular damage leading to bad things -- and B. didn't. Also, he works from his home doing computer animation, and that makes him SO much more fortunate than most people with an injury like this. It's his own business and he's his own boss, and the work doesn't require him to walk or even stand. So we're counting our blessings, looking forward to getting him back on his feet, and keeping a sense of humor.

(And did I mention that when I drove up to his house yesterday afternoon, there was a car UPSIDE DOWN in the street one block up from his house. A tiny narrow street, and the car was just sitting there, wheels up in the air, blocking the road. HOW DID IT GET IN THAT POSITION? WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?)

I apologize for that remark; it’s just that every time I drive down the viaduct, or out to the leeward shore, or down in Iwalei and see the homeless people whose roofs consists of a blue tarp or a freeway overpass I feel blessed; and know full well that under a little different circumstances, it could be me!
