For the past six months I've been hearing about, reading about, and seeing prototypes of a new, VASTLY improved helmet from the Shoei company. For what may be the first time in history, a manufacturer actually listened to what the public has been asking for, listened to the requested changes and improvements, and designed them ALL into a new motorcycle helmet. I can't begin to tell you how different this thing is... It still 'looks' like most helmets, but that's about all. Safer. Stronger. Lighter. Quieter (almost no wind noise.) Completely removable ADJUSTABLE liner for a customized fit. Deeper ear recesses for communication speakers, redesigned interior air-flow that finally brings cool air into the helmet on top of the head while pulling out heated air via a venturi principle... The list goes on and on...

The ONLY drawback to this helmet is the price... Almost $700...

Finally, Shoei began delivery of these new gems, but in dribs and drabs! The first shipment only had sizes Small, Medium, and Large, in a few selected colors. Weeks went by with no further shipments.

I only wear White helmets and I need a larger size...

This morning I received an e-mail from my favorite bike shop telling me that they had finally received one white Neotec helmet in my size, and would they like them to hold it for me...

I looked at my wife... with the saddest dog-begging eyes I could muster....
AND SHE SAID YES!!!!!!!

30 minutes later I was at the shop, 45 minutes later I was riding down the street with a brand new brain bucket!

I'm sitting here with my new helmet on my lap, scissors, and reflective tape in red and silver, cutting a wide red stripe for the back of the helmet, and a 1/4" silver stripe curving around from the front to each side.

And now I'll toast my new toy with a glass of Bombay Sapphire! Kampai!

Enjoy!

My hubby and I each have a monthly allowance so we can buy things without asking permission.

ouch. expensive, indeed. But a safer, and more comfortable helmet? Oh, yeah, worth every penny. I'm old enough to remember the accident to Pete Snell back in the mid-50's that led to the original Snell Foundation certifications for helmets. I had an early Bell helmet that was one of the very few to meet the standard in the mid-60's. Cost me $75, and that was a LOT of money for a 16 year old boy, let me tell you.

Peet's Major Dickason's, of course. A work day today, I'm afraid.

Morning has broken
Like the first morning,
Black bird has spoken
Like the first bird.
Praise the singing!
Praise for the morning!
Praise for them springing
Fresh from the Word!

Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday! It's a beautiful day and we're off for a ride. Surprise! But first... breakfast with a very big mug of Bigelow's "English Breakfast" tea, and some English Fried bread, sausages, and scrambled eggs. (Arterial roto-routing scheduled for later.)

We sort of do too, although not a fixed amount. But when the item costs more than a few hundred dollars, we figure it's polite to ask each other.

Oh yes! In this case... really worth every penny. I been a Shoei wearer ever since they came out with flip-front helmets 20 years ago, and was using the 'Multi-tec' helmet until yesterday. But the difference between the Multi-tec and this new Neo-tec is night and day. The older helmet was really only four years old, and I do try to change helmets every 5-7 years due to UV degradation of the shell, so this change just came a couple of years early.

My first helmet was a Bell also! Snell approved. But what I remember most is that it had a tiny little eye port. Almost felt like an early hardhat diver's helmet and looked more like something Robbie the Robot would have for a head!

These days I don't look so hard for Snell approval, as some of the European testing bodies take a stronger look, and have higher standards for several of the tests that "I" think are more important for street use. Snell standards were developed for the track, and they don't do a 'curb edge impact' test as there are no curbs on tracks! Also, until recently, Snell would not even consider a helmet that used anything other than a double D-ring for the chin strap.

OK... one more mug of tea... then it's us for the roads!

Congratulations on the new fantastic helmet, Stitchawl. I totally believe in having the best you can get for safety, especially for riding motorcycles. Of course, I only started to believe this after I slipped a gear, slid down a mountain trail, and continued over the side of the cliff. I was very lucky and was able to ride back out, once my bike and I was pulled up. I only ended up with a very nasty muffler burn on the inside thigh - right through my jeans. Now days, I don't trust anyone on the road and see no reason to give them a moving target to hit, so I don't ride anymore. I'm more nervous and prefer a nice big car. Well, at least the illusion of being safer.

Have a great ride.

I'm indulging with a sweet tea.

As I told my son... 'Cover whatever you can't replace.' These days they are making more and better armor for riders, armor that doesn't feel as if you are wearing a clunky Knight's full suit, so there is no excuse for not using it.

When we go for a long ride we are wearing armor plate over virtually every joint in our bodies, yet it feels just like a pair of pants, jacket, and gloves. Boots too. For summer riding the clothing is a mesh net made of Kevlar so wind can pass right through, with 'pockets' that hold the armor in place over elbows, forearms, shoulders, spine, etc. Comfy and safe. I see waaay too many young people here riding scooters with 'baseball cap' style helmets, shorts, and flip-flops... and big bandages on their chins, knees, or forearms.

I've always had trouble with Romans 12:14... I'm not real friendly to those who attack me, especially without provocation. I guess I've still got work to do on myself...

Time for a glass of rum, a bowl of popcorn, and "Hellfighters!" A great old John Wayne movie based on the exploits of Red Adair, the oil rig firefighter.

It's coffee right now, soon to be joined by popcorn. We are going to settle down in a minute and watch the first Transformers film (whoopeee! ), as our middle daughter wants to see it.
