Ugh, those end-of-book 'preview the next book' excerpts. They make it hard to figure out how much is really left in a book.

Exactly. I've come across as many as 7-8 excerpts/previews from different books, or 3-4 chapters from one book. So they simply have to go, I won't put up with them.

I sometimes like that. Knowing exactly how far from the end you are can give you a clue as to plot resolution when you don't want one.

Well, people are different. I always want to know exactly how much is left. I often even memorize the exact number of chapters in the book, to know when I'll reach the last chapter.

Looking at a book to buy set in late '30s and early WWII until the blurb mentioned that the protagonist's favorite book was The Thin Red Line. It wasn't published until 1962 and was based on James Jones's experiences on Guadalcanal.

I learnt something (no, don't ask, won't say) on Twitter/X that has...let's just say, I could have gone my whole life without knowing it, and it's changed how I feel about some things inexorably. I really wish I hadn't, as there's naught that I can do about it. Horrible stuff.

Yes, I've learned several such things too by just stumbling upon them. I still feel the shock from quite a few of them, even years later. This is also one of the reasons I avoid all social media like the plague. Sometimes ignorance truly is a blessing.

I used to watch local wildlife cameras 10 years ago or thereabouts; I avoid those too now, after some very shocking stuff I saw there.

What I object to is random LBGHT content which looks like it's been grafted onto the story at the behest of an editor seeking to tick boxes.

Heheh. I don't mind either gratuitous porn or info dumps. Unless either of them happens basically every other page.

I haven't read The Barrow, but I intend to (it has been on my read-soon list for a long time).

Edit: would you mind info dumps DURING gratuitous porn scenes (like in the early seasons of the Game of Thrones TV series)?

No, you really don't. My husband asked me what had me so upset and I refused to tell HIM so...no chance I'll tell anybody else. Nobody...people shouldn't suffer with it if they don't already know it, ya know?

Well, all that wildlife stuff...you get to see Leo eat this gazelle or whatever. We live in a very rural area and I already get to see Death from Above Raptors abscond with bunnies and all that, so...that's plenty.
