On a warm summer's eveOn a train bound for nowhere I met up with the gambler We were both too tired to sleep So we took turns a-starin' Out the window at the darkness The boredom overtook us, and he began to speak He said, "Son, I've made my life Out of readin' people's faces Knowin' what the cards were By the way they held their eyes So if you don't mind my sayin' I can see you're out of aces For a taste of your whiskey I'll give you some advice" ![]() ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azZr1cSu9-4 ) Good morning, everyone! Rainy day today so I think I'll go to a Pachinko parlor and see if I can win some extra money. I don't usually gamble but when I woke up with this song in my head I figured it was a 'sign.' But first breakfast... Ceylon Uva tea with a bowl of rice, miso soup, and a plate of tsukemono. That seem right for a rainy morning... Stitchawl |

I lost about $25, spent about 4 hours doing so, and had a lovely time. Like most gaming, you win, you lose, you win, you lose, etc. In the end, the house always wins. But I planned to only spend ¥2000 no matter what. Each game costs ¥100 and I kept that ¥2000 going for the whole afternoon.
This was my first time in a Pachinko parlor in about 15 years, and really only my 4th or 5th time over the past 25 years. The very first time I went (my second day in Japan) I won about $200 and figured it was pretty easy. So I went again the next day and lost $50 in the first 20 minutes... I left. I didn't go back inside one for several years, and then only because my date wanted to play. BTW... gambling is illegal in Japan. But they don't consider Pachinko 'gambling' because you don't actually win 'money.' You win 'prizes' which you take to a small window 'outside the pachinko hall' and exchange them for money... Now it's home again with a big mug of East India Company's "Royal Blend" tea and a plate of Walker's shortbread cookies. Stitchawl |

Well, I just agreed to do another book, even though my day job has me overloaded already. Sigh, I just do NOT know how to say "NO", I'm afraid. Actually, though, it was mostly because of _who_ asked -- a long time friend and editor who is a pleasure to work with. The schedule is silly short, but the book is only 350-400 pages, so I figure it's doable. It probably means I'll need to take a couple of weeks off from my day job if the contract gets renewed in July, but if it doesn't get renewed, or there's some slack time between portions, then I'm covered. I talked to my boss, he wants me back, but he also doesn't have budget approved for next fiscal year yet, so we agreed that if necessary, I'd take a couple of weeks in July.
But still, another summer spent working too hard. Why do these things never come up in November, when it's raining every day?? Fresh squeezed OJ done, and Peet's Major Dickason's in my cup. It's 10 degrees, a few puffy clouds in the west, and a gentle breeze. Oh, yeah, going to be a good day! |
