Just finished Russian Hill by Ty Hutchinson, the second book in the Thriller Thirteen package. And it was a very good, fast read. At seven cents a book, this is turning out to be a very good deal!

Next up: The Honor of the Queen by David Weber because I need a break from thrillers.

Sounds like something I'd love to read. Can't find a Kindle version though. Only pbook?

There appear to be no eBook versions of any of the Cadfael books. There are Audible versions of some, however.

Not really a fan of audiobooks. I get distracted too easily. Thank you anyway

Finished 3 books this weekend:

The Dogs are Eating them Now by Graeme Smith. I can't imagine a better and more honest book being written about the war in Afghanistan - a fabulous book!

Cockroach by Rawi Hage. This was my second time trying to figure out why this book has received such amazing praise. I still don't really get it - way overrated.

Old Man's War by John Scalzi. This was great fun! After the previous reads I really needed something like this to take me far away and fantasize about receiving an upgraded body. I started reading The Ghost Brigades 10 minutes after finishing the first. I really hope the series delivers the same fun all the way through.

Well, I can't say this one is going as well as the first. Plus I got distracted by a longish short Liaden work by Lee & Miller Code of Honor. Which is free up on the Splinter Universe.

Back to Spheres of Influence, but it IS a slog.

Published in 1951, it's interesting, not too dated, but the plot wasn't brilliant: it's hard to beleive that so many clever people would do so many stupid things.

Now for Lightspeed Magazine, May 2014. The latest issue.

They all used to be available as ebooks in the UK (I bought them all) but they disappeared from bookstores about a year ago.

I finished The Goldfinch fairly quickly for me by syncing between the audio and Kindle versions. I really loved it. People complain about the ending but I thought that it was fitting.

I finished The Serpent of Venice, which was as hilarious and bawdy as I was expecting. In fact, I stayed up a bit past my bedtime finishing it.

Just finished "The Moving Finger" by Agatha Christie. This was her 41st book, and was originally published in 1942. Although it's "officially" a "Miss Marple" story, she doesn't appear until 70% of the way through the book, and only plays a very minor role in the story.

Jerry and Joanna Burton, a brother and sister from London, take a country house in quiet Lymstock so Jerry can fully recover from injuries received in a plane crash. Within a week of settling in and meeting their neighbours, an anonymous letter arrives, rudely accusing the two of being lovers, not siblings. They quickly discover that such poison pen letters have been received by many in town, all focusing on a sex theme and none based on truth. Jerry sets out to try to uncover the truth of who is behind the letters, but the situation quickly worsens as an apparent suicide occurs as the result of a letter.

This was one of Agatha Christie's favourites among her own books, and is absolutely excellent. A masterpiece of detective fiction.

Interestingly, Wikipedia says this about it:

Quote:
This novel is one of two to differ significantly in American editions (the other being "Three Act Tragedy"), both hardcover and paperback. Most American editions of The Moving Finger have been abridged by about 9000 words to remove sections of chapters, and strongly resemble the Collier's serialisation which, mindful of the need to bring the magazine reader into the story quickly, begins without the leisurely introduction to the narrator's back-story that is present in the British edition, and lacks much of the characterisation throughout.
That's a great pity.

Well, that explains why there are no Brother Cadfael ebooks in England. Harry bought them all. I wonder who bought up all the Cadfael ebooks in the U.S.?

Sorry, Harry. I've been watching too many episodes of Burns and Allen.

Well that takes me back a few years. My father used to let us stay up late to watch Burns and Allen when we actually bought a TV. Wayne and Shuster was another one. State of the art TV comedy in Canada at the time I think.

I ended up reading Sealed Correspondence by Richard Rudomanski, it is a conspiracy theory thriller. It was ok, but nothing special.

Now for The End of Marking Time by CJ West, one of the first indie books I got after I received my Kindle.

I took a break from reading this month's book club selection to read The Necessity of Atheism by Percy Bysshe Shelley, a book I stumbled upon while doing research in the Patricia Clark Memorial Library. When I say stumbled upon, of course I knew of the book's existence. I just didn't know we had in it our library.

And now it's back to the so-far very entertaining Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling).

And very good it was too. A most enjoyable collection of new stories and reprints, although since the reprints were all new to me, I was very happy.

Now for An Unsafe Pair of Hands, a crime/detective novel by Chris Dolley. Looking good so far.
