Now, my morning Peet's Major Dickason's, and then off to do my session at TechFest. I'm woefully unprepared, but it's a topic I can do without much prep, and my co-presenter is equally solid, so should be OK. Back online tomorrow.

Well, that could have gone better. The presentation went fine, but the demo gods were in fine fettle and screwed up the networking. Severely limited what we could show, but that's OK, we talked around it.

No tea at all yesterday, and I want to correct that as soon as I get up and moving. I think I'll skip the Major Dickason's, and go straight to some Lion Mountain Keemun.

Good morning, everyone! It's a rainy start to the "Golden Week" holidays here, but I don't mind. We had two absotivly posolutely best bike touring rides on Saturday and Sunday. Best roads we've ever found in Japan so far! Simply delightful! All the farmers were out, getting their rice paddies ready. Some were already flooded and being planted.

Rain this morning has relegated the day to veranda gardening, but first some breakfast of Ahmad "English Breakfast" tea, French bread with olive tepenade, feta cheese, cold ratatouille, and grapes! Then it's off to the Garden Center for some tomato stakes, a couple of basil plants, and some pepper plants. This is the first year I've seen spicier pepper plants being sold here, and I'll put in two to see if indeed they do have some heat.

One more mug of Ahamd and it's off we go!

Lots of rain yesterday here, and many localised flood warnings. But we're still officially in drought conditions and a hosepipe ban is in effect. The problem is that we've had a lot less rain than usual over the past year.

CRussell, as our resident Orange Expert, please tell me why the "Sunkissed" oranges we got this afternoon are more sour than most lemons! Orange flavor, but talk about pucker power!! Wow! Have you heard of such a thing before?

As some one who lived in Souther California for six years, I can tell you that what matters is whether enough there is enough rain and snow melt to replenish the underground auqafors. If an area is in a drought it will take a great deal more then a few huge rains to do that. Keep in mind that a good amount of the water that fell finds it's way into storm drains and not the ground. Long, steady slow rains are actually best for drought ridden areas because they allow the rain to be absorbed instead of running off.

OJ and skim milk with my breakfast. What else is new?

Yup. Sure have. They were undoubtedly picked way too early. There are also plenty of different varieties of oranges and they run the gamut from very tart to very sweet, and from very little flavour to intense. So if you get an orange that's normally on the tart side, and it's picked early, the result tends to be rather unsatisfactory. I have to work with my local produce person to be sure that I'm getting ones that are in season. Nothing worse than getting a batch that are without flavour and very tart besides. Since I'm stuck with them for 40 Lbs worth.

Another variety is "Seville" oranges, which are downright bitter. They are used for marmalade, and are also the perfect orange to make Duck a la Orange. But impossible to eat out of hand. But their season here tends to be around the new year, so I go for blood oranges about then, since they come in about the same time of year.

About to have my own fresh squeezed OJ. These are heritage navel oranges and really quite good indeed.
