Thanks for the replies. My serial board will arrive Monday and I'm really looking forward to doing this. I'm sure there are a wide variety of reasons to jailbreak but it seems a shame that one has to go through a jailbreak process to set a standby wallpaper. ;-)

And yes, the image for the 4GB models will brick it. Several readers have been there, tried that, had to exchange them. See above answer. TL;DR: Yes |

There is another show-stopper . . . .
Our *.bin packages are "model locked" (just like Amazon's) and the person who maintains our packager is away at school. So even if we JB those models, there is no one to update KindleTool with the new model numbers. No update to KindleTool, no way for us to re-package anything for those models. |

Well I ended up getting a replacement Voyage because of a sticky and loose power button on the original. The replacement arrived today on firmware 5.8.7.0.1. I successfully downgraded to 5.5.0 but when I run ;installHtml it does a quick reboot and the jailbreak document is nowhere to be seen. I'm not sure if this is normal behavior for v5.8.7.0.1 downgrading to 5.5.0 and I fully admit to and apologize for not reading through 131 pages before posting.
I'm going to pause here and hope for some guidance. Please let me know if I've left out any useful information for troubleshooting. Thank you!! |

You MacOSx is destroying the content of the archive for you.
It is attempting to protect you from an "Unsafe archive". Use the PC to do the download and transfer to the Kindle. DO NOT open or let the PC open the archive!!! |

@knc1 you're my hero. I didn't even notice that Safari was set to "Open 'Safe' files after downloading" which was unzipping the .tar.gz and leaving me a .tar. I usually always have that setting disabled and assumed it was and didn't even notice the file extension had changed. A quick uncheck of that setting in Safari and I've got the original .tar.gz and it loaded properly as well as the jailbreak hotfix update. Thank you so much for your impressively fast help with this!
