What a nonsensical statement. Apple should stop supporting people who bought their equipment because a new standard came out, so Apple should drop everything and support that standard.

Handy hint. From the 1990s till 2008, the USB standard specified a maximum power rating of 1/2 amp.

I'm very sorry Apple didn't go back in time and change your old USB adapters to meet the new standard.

You made a statement that just isn't true. Not all wall warts work to charge a 650.

Apple does sell wall warts. But those wall wards are not standard as they do not work with the 650 for charging. Apple could use a standard USB spec wall wart as you can charge an iPhone via a computer's USB port.

Ummm.... no? I never said that.

Give it up, hoss. Most "wall wards" from most vendors do not support the brand-new USB charging standard. I've got drawers full of them.

Even new ones aren't required to do so, because the standard only applies to cell phones.

So, to sum up, you're attacking me for things I haven't said, and attacking Apple because devices meant to charge iPods don't also charge your Sony, which apparently uses a cell-phone charger interface for their reader.

Which, by the way, is completely incompatible with my PRS-600, which means I'll have to replace my AC adapter for the 600 if I upgrade.

I'm glad Sony loves standards, yes I am.

It will charge it to a full 4 bars, at least once, with some left over.

I do find that it seems that the reader goes from 4 to 3 bars a little faster when charged on the iGo, but from 3 to 2 to 1 takes a LONG time.

And since I carry the iGo with me, charged, it is no big deal.

[QUOTE=JSWolf;1347350]I can tell you what I use. I use an iGo wall charge with the Blackberry tip. Works very well with my 650 and I trust the quailty.

I prefer this charger:

As it both functions when plugged into the wall, or once its internal battery is charged, you can charge without a wall outlet.

Thanks so much for all the info. I just ordered the anywhere IGo charger and a few tips. I have a griffin charger that I really like that I was using for my other usb devices that has a part that detaches to charge my ipod and I was using the wall part to charge other USB devices but it does not work with my Sony reader. (It did work with my pocket book). I think I will give the griffin to my dh to use since he still has a pocketbook and ipod and could take it to work with him for his slower days in the winter at the golf course.

Greetings to you all! I registered on the forums to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that posted on this thread!! I was searching for a wall charger for my PRS650 and this forum trumped all other sites for the most useful list of workable chargers that could be used. I ordered the OEM Home Travel AC Charger (SPN5334A) for Verizon Motorola Droid A855 Cell Phone from Amazon here, after I found it on the list, and it works GREAT! (And only $3.50 with free shipping! Bonus!) The red LED comes on showing that it's charging, but, as I've only received the thing today, I've not had the opportunity yet to let it fully charge, and won't until the battery has gone down a little more. I'm confident that it will work well, however.

Thanks again for the super useful thread, everyone!

UPDATE 3/4/11:
I waited until the reader was down to one bar before I plugged it in today and let it charge for a few hours, and it did indeed shut off once it was fully charged, which was my primary concern. It also took less time to charge, as some other posters mentioned. Though I did not read while it was charging this time around, I did note that I was able to do so if I wished, which is not the case when plugged into the PC, as most are aware.

Thanks again for saving me loads of time and money searching around for a decent, affordable wall charger! You guys rock!

PRS-350/650 European charger

Hello,

For those who might be interested, here are the specs for a fully compatible AC charger (pocket size) with an European outlet :

SAMSUNG Travel adapter
Model : ATADU10EBE
IN : 100-240 VAC – 50-60 Hz – 1500mA
OUT : 5 VDC – 700 mA
I just finished checking the functionality, and it worked out well :
-RED light ON and arrow closed to the battery icon on the right bottom corner, while charging
-RED light OFF and no more arrow, when charging completed.

Pat

Note : We are able to read while charging, with that device.

Thanks for your update Mizhop. Do you have the ability to read while using your charger (Travel AC Charger SPN5334A for Verizon Motorola Droid A855)?

Reread your post...answered my own question

I don't know if it got mentioned already here, however, some may find this information useful:

Most Smartphones and the eReader, too, have two charge modes, slow and fast.

Connected to the PC or any other normal USB connection the device gets charged slow, because the current is limited to max. 500mA, that's the USB specifications.

To enable the fast charging mode, AC adapters that support it (they must deliver at least 1000mA (1A) output current) have the two USB data pins shortened. This way the device knows that it got connected to an AC adapter. That's why almost all smartphone chargers charge the eReader in fast mode, they use the same 'technology'. And because the eReader knows that it isn't connected to a PC but an AC adapter you can continue reading on it.

If you connect the eReader to a USB HUB which isn't connected to a PC, the data pins are naturally not shortened, so the eReader thinks it got connected to a PC, uses the slow charging mode and tries to connect to the PC displaying the odd looking screen.

I have just tested a charger on both my Sony 650 and 350. Neither device had a very low battery, so I'm not sure how long it will take to fully charge from near empty.

When I plug it in the red light by the power switch comes on, and I can use the device normally. In the bottom right of the screen the battery icon has the little arrow next to it. When it is fully charged the red light shuts off, and the battery icon loses the arrow. I paid about $1.50 plus shipping on Ebay, for an open box item.

Wall Charger
Here is another that doesn't work. I really hoped it would since I was looking for a charger that could accept a variety of USB plugs (mini/micro).

Griffin Power Block Dual P2090
2 Outputs both stated: 5.2V 1000mA

Must be the pin config thing. Funny, the PRS-350 will charge on the HTC Incredible wall charger. The HTC phone will charge on the Griffin Power Block, but not the PRS-350. The weirdness continues.

Car Charger
RND Power Solution Dual USB DC car charger for IPad
This one does appear to work!

In very tiny print on the unit:
Samsung P1000
2 Outputs: 5.0V 2.1 Amp
