You do have {series_index:0>3s} and {series_index:|[|] - } example but not those two combined.
It is obvious to you, to me, to other people that program for a living, but it might not be obvious to the average Calibre user.

I think that the more useful and usable examples you use in the documentation, the better chance that an average user will try out those extremely cool features.
We are thinking like programmers, hackers, tinkerers but an average user might not.

I agree. The FAQ is in the source tree. As you have a skill with this, perhaps you can change it to be better and more intuitive?

For those of you who run from source, the serializer trunk is now obsolete and will no longer be updated. The code has been moved to the main trunk, in preparation for tomorrow's release.

A book title that starts with the letter A ends now with ',
A Local Habitation
-becomes-
Local Habitation, A

I know the book is sorted this way but it just seems wrong to me.

May or not be because of the beta, but I am running 7.906

Check out the tweaks, specifically this tweak.

# Control how title and series names are formatted when saving to disk/sending # to device. If set to library_order, leading articles such as The and A will
# be put at the end
# If set to 'strictly_alphabetic', the titles will be sorted without processing
# For example, with library_order, "The Client" will become "Client, The". With
# strictly_alphabetic, it would remain "The Client".
save_template_title_series_sorting = 'strictly_alphabetic'

That indicates you dont have a font on your system capable of displaying the unicode star character. I would suggest installing a free unicode capable font like DejaVu

That's weird, I just tried it on my winxp install and they showup there. Probably something temporary, try restarting calibre/your computer.
