chee-TOT-l. The character at the end isn't the "v" in Russian, but a character that denotes whether to make the consonant "hard" or "soft". If I remember correctly, this is the "soft" character. So you de-emphasize the "L" sound. Maybe that's close to Harry's - but to me, Harry's version looks a lot like citadel, with the emphasis on the last syllable, where I believe this would have the emphasis on the second and sort of swallow the last one. But I'll be the first to admit, I'm long out of practice and could be wrong! ![]() |

I have spoken Russian for about ten years... and at times this little letter still causes me problems when speaking....however when speaking quickly in conversation it is generally not a problem....for me at least... Ы is much harder for beginning Russian speakers to get a grip on... Well, the more names for ebook readers in English the better....bring them on ....how about a word from Ancient Greek HarryT? |

That's just feel good non-sense. There will always be a tower of babel, there's never going to be a global language.
And if there is, it won't be something like French that's spoken by relatively few people around the globe, but would be something like Chinese or Spanish that's already the first language of huge numbers of people. Add in the disdain many nations have for anything French/French Canadien and there's no way the French language is going to spread, or a term like Liseuse is going to become the commonly used term for e-readers around the globe. |

But at least everyone on MR knows what it means now - which is a good thing don't you think?

Everyone who drops into the Llounge does ..... whether everyone on MR does, is another question that needs answering.
I keep wondering if this ought to be put up as a poll in the General Discussion forum (rather than the lounge). Knowing doesn't, necessarily, equate with "using" ..... |
