Not really but with the long-term drought it seems that way. I don't have the sprinklers on yet but the grass in the back needs it's first mowing (might do that later today as well) it's about 4" or so average right now I'd say.

Oh and I've got a few Garlic plants that are 2nd year that have returned. I planed a few the previous year and actually got some nice fresh garlic. That the extent of my vegetable garden.

I just got back from planting jalapeños, sweet banana peppers, and squash. Still have to plant the bell peppers, and then decide if I want to plant the tomatoes grown from seed in the remainder of the garden, or plant butter beans.

I'm leaning toward butter beans. I could always plant the tomatoes in place of anything that dies.

Tomatoes, tomatoes. Fresh from the plant, hot with the sun, what a byte. Who cares for fresh from the plant beans. The aroma of beans is post-production. Ah Ah.

Sounds like you've been pretty busy there Tom. I'm betting the results are going to be worth it!

Ah, but I already have a whole row of tomatoes, and butter beans are mighty fine vittles!

Just got back from planting the bell peppers, during which I also finished the unabridged audiobook of A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. Finished it just as the last bit of soil was being patted into place! Talk about timing!

Time will tell. If they aren't, it won't be from lack of trying!

One of my favorite things to eat and grow fresh in a garden is pole beans. They are like string beans/green beans. mmm, mmmm, good!

I like those too. Only problem is that the bean season here is so short--I have to pick and choose basically one or two types (I have a pretty small garden plot.) Pole beans would probably yield more, but I can't give up the snap and snow. They are just my favorite. I did try growing soy beans one year, but they didn't do well. Spider mites loved the plants. Spider mites love snaps too, but the plants get a good head start before the spider mites get going. Which is now...so the battle begins...

The first years (2 or 3) that I lived in the country, I had a huge vegetables garden, growing practically everything I could get. I even tried artichokes. Then I realized how much work that is. Watering, weeding, caring, fighting bugs, screening, sheltering, supporting, picking, cleaning, washing, freezing, turning the soil before frost, fertilizing, mulching, composting, taking medications for the back pain, ...

Now I have only salads. And year in, year out, courgettes. Tomatoes are not so good here. I envy Tom's latitude.
Certainly, to put the little plants in the soil or seeing the seeds sprout is a very deep and intense pleasure.

rabbits? how wonderful!
Slug and snails I know how to deal with, but I am not divulging any details not to be censored, slugs really. Snails I have magic blue micro pellets.

I am loathe to use chemicals of that nature, not least of all because of cats/birds etc...

...and I don't see why I should waste my beer, either ...

me thinks I'll scout all slugs/snails out and leave them in a jar for the blackbirds and thrushes to feast on ...

Hello, what beautiful pictures!

I'm in London and it's sunny and beautiful here today. My bleeding heart plant is out in the garden.

Here's a photo: and detail:

I love, love, love this plant! Its arrival always heralds the start of spring.
