Harry has created carefully crafted and thoroughly proofed ebook editions of the works of Charles Dickens. The original source text was from Project Gutenberg, but the Dickens works were among the earliest contributions to Project Gutenberg. They date from well before Distributed Proofreaders became the feed for posted PG texts, and vary widely in quality and accuracy. Harry has done significant work in producing clean and accurate texts, and his versions may well be definitive. He'd love to give them to PG, but can't find anyone to take them. Current submissions to PG all go through the DP proofing process, but there seems no way to get existing PG texts dating from before DP resubmitted for cleanup and quality control. ______ Dennis |

Ricardo,
Could you suggest an e-mail address that I should contact to see about giving my proof-read Dickens books back to PG? |

i've not been following this thread and i've only just partially skimmed it, so forgive me if this has already been said.
it seems to me that at the heart of this discussion is the feeling (shared by many) that the download process here is unnecessarily complex / inefficient / inconvenient. i am happy to report that there is currently a team working on a complete redesign of the upload AND download system, to make it more convenient and streamlined. this is a huge project, so please be patient, it will take some time to implement, but we are listening to feedback about the download process here and we are taking steps to improve it. |

I figured that, torrent-friendly or not, the reason for the somewhat uploaded ebook management arrangement was software-based--it's hard to turn a forum into an efficient file-exchange system, especially if you want to keep the ability to offer comments. |

![]() How about access to down load a complete genre at one time? I know I'd be very happy with that! Then, when someone recommends an uploaded author I'm not familiar with, I'll already have that work ready and waiting, only needing to be put into my reader. Stitchawl |

If we're saying that a company selling such a PD work is being unethical because they're implicitly claiming Harry's work, couldn't you also say that Harry is being unethical in implicitly claiming the author's work was his. IMO, both arguments are silly. Harry didn't write the book, but he's using the author's hard work as a basis for making his own improvements. Someone selling that work is doing the same thing. They're just using Harry's work as a basis for improving their business. Neither the author nor Harry has anything to complain about. That's the nature of PD material. The whole point of it is that anybody can do with it what they please. If Harry doesn't like the possibility that someone can use his work for something he doesn't like, then he can choose not to release his changes to the public. Once he does release it though (and we're tall thankful that he does), complaining about how people use that material is a little absurd. |
