Nope, Nomesque, I'm just one of the chaps here and offer our ebooks in thanks for the bloody brilliant advice and friendship I've had at MR recently. No skin off my nose (the hard work goes into the paperbacks) to offer something in return for what I find here. I guess I've had a couple of dozen emails from MR folks asking for books and sent out maybe a hundred or so ebooks, and the personal email swaps have been a bundle of fun and -- I think -- folks are pretty happy with what they're getting. Don't get your underwear in a twist, mate. Why not drop a line? Hoots. Neil

Yep, Abecedary. But I'm very old and a bit Scottish, so you've got to give me a break. My job's to dot the eyes and cross the knees ... and, yup, I do get muddled sometimes with all the tech stuff. Let me off this time with a caution? Hoots. Neil |

I've sold my e-books for $3.50, originally as low as $2.50. Never (before this thread) have I heard of anyone who could not buy them through the paypal site because they were priced too low. And yes, Paypal takes a piece of the transaction, but it is a pittence... not worth taking your books out of their system.

Steve? No, you certainly can pay for them with paypal. The problem is paying directly with a card. $2.50 falls below the minimum I can do on a transaction on the credit card (and I won't use my debit card, because it charges me £1 for foreign transactions, if either the transaction processor or the recepient are foreign...)

Most credit card merchant accounts hit the hardest on the monthly fees (which do not exist with PayPal's standard account) and early termination fees on merchant/processor contracts, not the transaction fees. The transaction fees for most credit card merchant accounts tend to be cheaper than PayPal. Why credit cards would refuse charges as low as $2.50 is beyond me! The only thing out of which I can make sense is your point that your bank charges you £1 for foreign transactions for debit card purchases. That kind of fee I've heard before, although they're more rare here in the U.S. |

That minimum charge is obviously not the same with every card merchant or country, which (I suppose) is why it never came up before. Of course, you don't usually expect to get e-mails from people saying, "I wanted to buy your book, but it was too cheap! Raise your prices, dude!"
One of the things that still needs further development is the micropay process. Most of the transaction fees and minimums we have today were set quite a while ago, and the advancements to the web, transactions and general efficiency, not to mention the fairly recent introduction of electronic-only products of potentially small stature, merit an adjustment to the fee system. Unfortunately, the financial industries are almost as tightly entrenched in "the way we do it" as the publishing industry... one of the reasons we just witnessed the financial meltdown... and expecting them to make such a change will only come at considerable pain and expense... in short, we may eventually get it, but we probably won't like the hoops we'll be forced to jump through to get it... Hmm... slightly ![]() |

Dawn is right though--credit cards and merchants often have rules about small purchases. I can't buy anything under a dollar with one of my cards (card rule). In some stores, they will not take a credit card if under x--because of the fees THEY pay. It takes too big of a cut percentage-wise (I think they pay a fee for use and then a percentage of the total.)
I gotta go check the scottish guy's site. Does he sell anything besides twisted underwear??? :>) Maria |
