If you don't want buttons, then what good would it do to have buttons where you'd be holding the Reader?

I like the design of the Kobo Aura H2O and the Amazon PW5/PW6. Slim bezels and no buttons. However, if it has to have buttons, I really good place to put the buttons so they are in nobody's way when holding the Reader is under the screen. This is where Sony put the buttons on the T1.

It's not a hate for buttons. It's just that if they aren't placed properly, then they are in the way.
You probably already know this, but the Kindle Paperwhite (and Colorsoft) Signature Edition has a feature where you can double tap the back of the Kindle to turn pages (however well it works). Would this be your idea of buttons?

How easy is it to trigger a page turn by accident on this Kindle?

It's a double tap, so it shouldn't be too easy.

If it's not easy to accidentality trigger, that that's a go instead of buttons.

But it only works to page forward. You can't page back with this method. So it's a no-go.

It could be made to tap on the right to go forward and tap on the left to go back.

Nope not holding an ereader with two hands and not reaching across the back to try and get a tap in the sensor zone on the opposite side I’m holding it. Likewise a top/bottom arrangement is a non starter because you’d have to guess at where the line was for top and bottom which isn’t solvable in a way that doesn’t make the device weird to hold.

Currently the buttons do this job flawlessly.

Also if you think buttons are adding appreciable cost to the consumer I’ve got some bad news for you about haptic sensors and what they would do vs buttons to the price.

There could be a detachable page turner. Put the USB-c port on the side of the ereader, like the Libra 2 has. A remote page turner appropriately shaped could plug into it and voila you have page turn buttons. If you remove it, you have a remote. Plugged in, it would not need a bluetooth connection. Add a pass-through connection, such as one sees on some
USB-c to 3.5mm adapters for charging/file transfer.

So introduce points of failure to solve a non issue? Like use the buttons or not it should be patently obvious that Jon is at best a fringe case, and is arguably living up to his curmudgeon title by making a mountain out of a grain of dust.

The crux of his claim is that the buttons are in the way. Which has no basis in reality since you need to apply additional intentional pressure to activate them and the edges are beveled enough to not cut into your fingers even with force exceeding the amount necessary to activate them.

And I would guess that if there was a large outcry of "buttons in the way", Kobo could provide an option to disable top/bottom/both buttons.

I don't see many requests in the patch thread for disabling the buttons?

Or offer more than effectively one line without buttons versus the three lines with buttons. Or they’d have made bigger changes in the Libra line for where they are on the device.

So yeah clearly they have it mostly right for the majority and it’s just about dialing it in with small shifts

I really liked the Kindle keyboard buttons. Was I in the minority?

The Kindle keyboard did not require a huge bevel. It did have a huge keyboard, but we can do without that now
