Ha! We're further along the AI path than I thought.

It seems like determining whether something is AI generated will become increasingly more difficult and will never be conclusive, just awarded a level of certainty based on a system of definitions.

The consequence is that some people will be unfairly judged as plagiarists.

Wasn't AI supposed to free up people from crap work so they could have free time for arts and culture?

instead, we have this...

Space and Time magazine is an SF semiprozine (semiprofessional zine) that has been around for decades. But recently, they got some heat for a Twitter post announcing an upcoming issue where authors and artists will "collaborate" with AI to create fiction, poems, and art. The responses have been purty negative. (You can also see the announcement here.)

The editor has tried to explain that she doesn't want AI to replace authors, she just wants to explore this, but most people have not been swayed. There are so many questions. Why do this during the Writer's Strike?! Can the stories be copyrighted? Why is the pay rate so low (a penny a word)?

I get the frustration. The timing with the Writer's Strike is off, for sure. But, AI collaboration isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's a tool, like anything else. It can help spark new ideas or refine existing ones.

As for copyright, the law isn't entirely clear. Generally, works created by AI aren't copyrighted, but if there's human involvement, it gets murky.

About the low pay rate...well, that's a different can of worms. Zines often operate on tight budgets, but writers definitely deserve fair compensation.

Even before ChatGPT, there were lots of sites that provided writing prompts. There were also books full of writing prompts -- from print books published by traditional houses to indie books. I found these a lot more useful because they were generated by people. Even when the sites were automated (like RPG prompt sites), the suggestions came from fans and not from a bot scraping the Internet.

The AI tools we have now are creating "content" (eww, that word) by scraping existing things from the Internet. Some of its wordage comes from copyrighted material (such as articles on websites). Some people have learned that when you enter a sample chapter into certain sites that are supposed to just rate your text, their text is then being scraped.

That is more than murky. That is the Swamp of Sadness, and we have already lost Artax.

For a magazine that has been around since 1966, they could do better. According to Duotrope, this magazine accepts voluntary "tip jar" payments as part of its submissions process.

Traditionally, before Internet, the UK and Ireland had magazines and papers that didn't pay at all, and condition of submission was they got the copyright.

I was going to submit to an Irish weekly magazine that's still printed on newsprint (though possibly better than the early 1900s when they launched). I discovered they still run that scheme, so abandoned the plan to offer them a serialised story. Some issues are quite good.

Some quite famous UK monthly technical magazines (one at least till 2017) did that scheme too.

A podcast I listen to, The Gist had an episode recently where he interviewed Stephen Marche, the author of Death Of An Author along with an entity known as "Aidan Marchine," which is a pseudonym for a suite of AI services. This isn't a hack author. Stephe Marche was trying to see what it would take to get AI to write a readable novella. Interesting interview, Google Podcasts or Apple Podcasts.

FYI: The Gist is a news, opinion and general interest podcast. The interview starts a few minutes in.

AI is just a tool, though, and not all bad. I agree that human-generated prompts can be more useful, but AI can help too.

As for the low pay rate, I get that zines have tight budgets, but writers should be fairly compensated, especially for a long-running magazine. The "tip jar" payment system is an interesting approach, but there's room for improvement.

I got a laugh when I ran into this article in the Verge:

How hard would it be to check those citations? Sure, use AI, but if your name is going to be on it, check the damn citations.

That was the funny part for me. He used ChatGPT to check. No need to use any other tool... right?
